Taught the daughter to drive for the first time today. I learned how to drive in an '88 Izuzu Trooper II. What did you learn in?

Very lucky daughter!! I learned in a 1954 Ford Crestliner sedan, with fender skirts and gangster whitewalls. It had a 239ci V8 with overhead valves (!), manual choke, and a two speed Fordamatic transmission. I later learned it would do all of 83MPH, wide open, but the tube radio (once the tubes warmed up) was awesome. Best part, the air vents, which were tunnels to the wheel wells with a door, held a fifth of Ron Bacardi Light perfectly. Those were the days!

You have a strong heart. LOL. The good thing is that modern cars have a bunch of active safety features built in, so it helps.

I guess in 10-15 years down the road, the kids don't even need to learn how to drive.

I learned to drive in one of my father's cars. But I learned to drive a stick in a jeep during a summer beach job. We used a jeep pulling a railroad tie to smooth out the sand each day. Great way to learn to drive a stick.

That's a tough one. An old Ford farm tractor that didn't have a synchro, then a motorcycle and a manual VW Dasher diesel all before I was permitted to drive on the street. Officially a Subaru wagon and took my driving test in a Ford Thunderbird.

Renault 12 (Look it up). Then drive a Renault 4, 4 speed manual mounted on the dash and a fairly more civilized and modern Renault 18.

It was rally modified with a 4 speed manual gearbox on the floor and manual steering.

Good on you to teach her how to drive but I will pay for someone else to instruct my kids when the time comes. Perhaps sending them both to the BMW performance driving school would not be a bad idea.

My Rambler (or more accuately my mother's) did have a P button. The transmission clunked whenever you pushed a button.

Also the grille had some minor damage especially to the name badge, so we called it the ABLER. This is what it looked like; mine was white.

I remember those. Yes, mine was way more modern. I think it was a 1959.

1968 Dodge Monaco, a tank of a car for all of $350. My parents didn't want me learning in their new Chrysler.

This is the vehicle model I was borrowing from a friend for my driving lessons (Stock photo enclosed.) Even today after many many moons, I feel seasick even by casting my eyes on a picture of that freaky little car.

Now very collectable here in the UK and starting to fetch good money. Designed to carry, eggs, chickens and an urn of milk across a plowed field without spilling or braking a single egg
