Official 0-100 km/h dropped from 5.1s to 4.9s

Hello,

We all know there is some variability in a complex product, however slightly understating power output seems to be the normal approach by BMW. When I ordered my 2019 540i xDrive Touring, I am certain they stated 0-100 km/h at 5.1s.

Today I was killing some time with the configurator (German) and noticed now the official number was 4,9s.

Anybody know if there is any mechanical change in the car behind this? Or is it just a more truthful figure in the same car?

I only have 3000km on mine and have yet to do use launch control, however I would not doubt sub 5s considering the grip.

Is that the info the the '19 or the '20 540i? BMWUSA.com shows the 2019 540i at 0-60 of 4.9 and I swear that's what it's been all along.

Maybe the previous numbers you saw were 0-100 km/h and for some reason now it's 0-60 MPH? That would seem odd in Europe, but who knows.

As far as traction is concerned, I'd assume that car is very much not traction limited. It's the same basic setup in the M5 (in that it's AWD, ZF8, etc) and it is much much faster, telling me that a 540i has traction to spare for acceleration, though obviously the M5 has wider tires, but not that much wider.

I ordered my 540i xDrive sedan in 2017 and official 0-100kmh time was 4.8 back then. It still is 4.8 , no change.

well 0 to 100 is more like 0 to 62, if it's "updated" engine then torque is slightly up?

The problem with this kind of performance is that the fun is over even quicker!

Interesting. The US configuration shows the 0-60 at 4.6 now. I wonder why. The 540 didn't get an improved engine this year, did it?

At risk of being flamed: Does it matter? Do we buy BMWs to do drag racing? Don't we care more about handling, suspension, etc.?

No flames from me, but I do care to an extent. I just like the feeling of a fast take off. That's not to say I mind a difference of 0.1s - that is beyond my personal point of recognition. But I know that a 4.7s car feels noticeably quicker to me than a 5.2s one (my current car v my last one).

perhaps they're putting B58B30M1 vs. B58B30M0 engine in 2020 car (same hp, but M1 has more torque)?

It is interesting that they have updated the figures - I keep wondering why they don't offer the higher power version of the B58 engine - as per the M340i etc in the 540, especially in markets such as the UK. Whilst I'm certainly no engineer and thus don't claim to know the ins and outs of the differences between the engines, I can't imagine they'd be too significant? Surely? I am very happy with my 540 for sure, but for my next one I'd like something closer to 400bhp!

guess they want to put the M lite to be M lite especially since they're bringing the 550 to UK?

though given the upgrade in power in 550 kind makes sense to slot something ~400hp?

If they do bring the 550 to the UK I would be very interested - although I do prefer an I6 to the V8. I've heard lots of talk about the 550 but not seen anything tangible just yet

If a halfway house M (gasoline) is coming out I would also bet it is an M550i, as an M540i with 374 ps would not be enough of a bump (well, that is like a "competition" bump but we all know that will only happen for full on M-models).

I even saw a dressed 5-touring in the X6 M50i videos from Nürburgring, and this is a car that would really interest me (I will have this engine in my X5 M50i from Feb 2020).

Check it out here (at 0:37s):

There hasn't been a M5 Touring since the E61 and with 530 ps it would put an M550i Touring in this territory at least (I guess a real M5 Touring won't come, anyone afford that itch will have to go to Alpina).
