July Software Update

Can someone please explain exactly what updates our G30's will get (or will be able to get) with this new July software release? I just leased a MY2020, and it's so frustrating that the car is in a kind of upgrade limbo. iDrive 7 advertised, but smaller 10" control display, not 12" like all of the other iD7 models. Then it turns out that it's really iD7 'Lite', whatever that means. And now this from the CEO today:

"In July 2020, BMW will release its most comprehensive vehicle software upgrade to date, with new and improved features for vehicle connectivity and navigation. These features will be included straight from the factory with every BMW vehicle that has Operating System 7, such as the new BMW 5 Series. And for compatible BMW vehicles built before July, already in customers’ hands, these great new updates can be added with a free over-the-air software upgrade, which will be available from third quarter onwards."

So, will the G30 have RSU in Q3, or not? And if so, how would it be enabled - a dealer coding? And is the G30 a "compatible vehicle"? Confusing. Really is incredible just how little attention they give the 5 Series, considering it's the 3rd best selling style in the U.S.

I'm wondering the same. It won't be over the air, it will be a dealer update for our vehicles . I did read somewhere "if your vehicle has the correct hardware", I think this will be the point. The option in this upgrade which interests me is the option to enable rear DRLs

We won’t know until someone gets it installed at the dealer since it can’t be done as an RSU right now. If we are in September or December and no one has been able to get such an update it would be definite that no update is coming.

It is pretty clear that BMW plans to use iDrive 7 as a unified platform to deliver not only updates but new features and revenue streams. As a result, I don’t think the G30 was given iDrive 7 by accident. I also think it was crippled at launch to keep from undercutting the LCI. As a result, I am in the camp who expect we will see the major update and RSU this month. Obviously, we won’t see hardware upgrades like Apple CarKey or the like. But I don’t think we’re being left on an island to die.

Otherwise it will be a source of customer churn for BMW. Lots of marketing around iDrive 7 and they don’t clarify the exclusion of the 5 in that marketing.

Is the G30 the only model with Idrive 7 lite installed in MY 2019-20?

I think the X3 as well.

For the G30 iDrive 7 “lite” is only MY2020.

So that press release would indicate that every car manufactured prior to July 2020 will get the new release this fall, over the air. And I assume that if your model can’t accept RSU (like our G30s), then we’re out of luck. Oh well.

We'll need to wait a while and see...

I expect we'll see an update to add AA, at minimum, as otherwise they'll have a lot of negative owner sentiment to wrestle with (why a 3 series got it, but the 5 didn't...). Their marketing announcements are pushing RSU because they want to market it as them finally starting to compete against Tesla.

The thing we're really coin tossing here whether or not this update will bring us RSU as the only two BMW cars with iDrive 7 to my knowledge missing it is the X3 and 5 series in MY2020.

I picked up the car from the dealer after being in the shop for 5 days. They say that they updated all software available to the latest versions. They didn't seem to know specifically about the July 2020 update for iDrive 7. How can I check to see if this update was made?

If you're asking about RSU per the drivers guide manual you will see under CAR --> Settings --> General Settings --> an option for "Remote Software Upgrade"

If you don't see the RSU option than I would suspect you don't have the update were expecting.

I'm talking about RSU. Possibly the July ISTA update will unlock AA to show up in a future Connected drive Store update.

ID7lite will unfortunately remain ID7lite. It happens. BMW has done it before. Ask anyone with ID5. That lasted a minute before they released ID6. Kidding, but not really.

Did anything else come with the update. I have a 2020 540 and I'm trying to get my dealer to do update.

Let them know July update has AA and you want it. Or tell them you're having Bluetooth connectivity issues. Be persistent.

Just make sure they've downloaded the July update as some dealers can be slow to update their programming computers.
