WHAT?!!! You listed the finish order completely wrong! The corrected rankings:

5. Jaguar
4. BMW
3. Audi
2. Cadillac
1. Mercedes

Unfortunately this is correct. I am most surprised that the older Audi A6 beat out the M540. If you look at the scoring - there is one to two points separating them - but I believe BMW should have been higher - they were stuck on the steering.

It doesn't make sense at all, they sounded like as though Rolls Royce only make cars like Silver Shadow ,that was a thing of past dear test staff
Still, I read your test reviews but my winner is apparent a car coming from Bavarian Region of a continents called Europe and who bears the three words in front of the brand name ....Hmmmm sounds familiar ?

It is a good job we get a better G30 over here in Europe.

Seems the European and USA markets (if the magazine reviews are to be believed) are coming from different places. The BMW is clearly the car of choice in the reviews and comparison tests over here.

I read the C&D reviews, to be honest, they do appear to be quite confusing. I'm not sure they are reflecting what many customers want, more what the testers desire.

The MSRP for each the MB AMG E43 is $73,325. The base price for the 540ix is $58,750. Of course if you spend 25% more on another German car model you will get more. The comparison was flawed because they were not comparing apples to apples. It was comparing an apple to oranges. The M550i has a base MSRP of $72,100. If Car and Driver was serious about a reasonable comparison just pit the MB AMG E43 against its price competitors the BMW M550i and the Audi S6.

C/D fits the criteria to the available test cars. (Like one of our profession's starchitect napkin sketches that purportedly inspired a masterpiece building, but was clearly sketched after the fact.) This time is was "we’d investigate the proliferation of turbocharged and supercharged six-cylinders in the premium-mid-size-sedan segment" as if price is irrelevant. If an M550i, S6, and CTS-V approaching $90k were available, then cylinder count would be irrelevant. And knowing C/D's preference for burnouts over refinement, the Cadillac would have won.

What is the percentage of BMW buyers that read Car and Driver?
Because I never heard of the magazine until this 'doom and gloom' review. I accept I live in UK and almost all European motoring magazines declared G30 the winner compared to competitors. The base G30 520D won WhatCar car of the year.

I am beginning to think some people on this forum are somehow too gullible to the opinion of this motoring magazines or masochist or they are paid to reduce our love for BMW.

Sorry for the rant, not aiming to cause any offence

I sense that the European magazines are seeing the G30 fulfilling the current needs and requirements of users. Hence the top marks for the package BMW have put together in the G30.

The US mag' has a different agenda. As I read it, partly in the past, more driver focused, (perhaps too much so these days). Not focusing enough on the over all "package" (sum of the parts) among the competitors, which here in Europe most see as the key requirement.

Here in Europe the G30 hits the spot, for the package on offer. Plus most cars sold here will be small diesels, so ultimate performance is not the centre of attention in most of the reviews.

Car and driver bases their reviews of dynamics largely on steering feel. I watched a video that stated the XF was the only competitor with better dynamics.

Each review is just a data point. If car and drivers word is true, I'm not sure how it's even possible to have fun driving my car! Which is weird because I have fun in it all the time!
