Motor Trend G30 530i Long Term Test
This is how BMW, like other premium German car manufacturers, make their money: options. The long-termer from Motor Trend has $20K worth of options!
I think it will be very interesting to follow their long term test... http://www.motortrend.com/cars/bmw/5...-530i-arrival/

Odd choice of car to test with nearly every option except the MSport package. The MT commenters are a hillariously angry mob, but they kind of have a point about the value proposition of a $72k 4-cylinder 5-series.

I got a good laugh from all the vitriol in the comments section of the MT article but I somewhat agree with them. $72K for a 4 cylinder??? Granted the car had almost every option but that's only a little less than the list price of my 550i which has quite a few options. The price zee Germans are selling their 4 cylinder models is getting a little out of hand. I priced out a loaded Mercedes E300 and it came out at almost $76K. There is no way in hell I would ever pay anything near that for that type of car with a 4 cylinder engine.

I am glad to see the 530i tested, as it is the volume model and gets less press than the 540i. It is also the version I will choose to replace my 528i. I just feel that the level of options sets the car up for disappointment on the what-else-can-I-get-for-$72k question. I drove a poverty spec model with only the Driver Assistance and Comfort Access options - Sensatec seats even - and came away thinking it was an incredible value for $55k.
