From F10 M5 to G30 M550i

Long time lurker, first time poster (on this forum)! Recently jumped from a 2013 M5 to a 2018 M550i and could. not. be. happier!

The interior and tech in the G30 are light years ahead of the previous platform, and the power plant is really better suited for AWD.

Mine is a 2018 with all available options except night vision and rear entertainment. Just a few pics for now, but I'll be active as I mod.

By the way, do anyone else's front arm rests (drivers and passengers doors) squeak and creak like crazy? I'm taking it in to dealer, but not sure if it's an epidemic. Cheers!

I did same jump from 2013 M5 to 2019 M550i in May.
At first I missed the intake and SOUL straight pipes and sound. I felt like the M550 was lacking some top end HP but realized my car had 7 miles on the way home . Sure you feel the same, instead of dodging stop light runs, I like them with the all wheel drive!! I added Dinan V2 at 3500 miles and it was a great bump in tq and hp. I've walked some cars that should beat the M550. I do miss the bangin olofsun stereo having the HK in this one. But you just can't beat the safety of all wheel drive! I love it!
Contracts!!

Well said. I had RPI GTM on the M5 and it was a bit much. I'm in my 40s with two kids in the back, I'm ok with stealth mode. I do miss my 21" ADV1s! Oh, and the Bowers & Wilkins sound is insane. Far superior to B&O in the F10. 🍻

Photo uploads not working, as usual, will try again later.

I'll admit to sometimes feeling a tiny twinge of regret about not shopping an F90 M5 more seriously before building my M550i. But then I got a chance to drive an F90 M5C as part of the M Town Tour. For me, I made the absolutely right choice. The M5 is a beast. But it's noisy. It's harder to see out of. And the seats are not as comfortable for somebody who is 6'5". Plus it felt like it was a caged animal fighting to break free. Best way I can describe my feelings on the M5 vs. M550 debate: I feel like the M550 does a reasonable impersonation of a "true" sports sedan such as the M5. But the M5 does a bad impersonation of a luxury sedan, something the M550 excels at. I did like the feel of the carbon ceramic brakes, though.

Squeaky door panel -- glad I'm not the only one with this. I just learned to ignore it as the only time I really hear it is when I'm cornering hard. And then my mind is occupied with other things. If your dealer fixes the issue please let the board know.

I spec'd the B&W system. It is really nice. Expensive. But nice.

congrats! beautiful car.

def have a passenger side door arm rest squeak that comes ans goes. It needs to be a certain type of bump in road to hear it, which is why I bet not everyone can hear it. There are certain types of bumps that I go over and the car is quiet, but other types make the squeak sound.

My armrests squeak and creak like crazy if my arm is resting on it or my front passenger's is. If you push on the panel (in toward window), it also makes a bunch of noise.

I am very surprised so few people have this this issue.

Those ADV1s were killer on your M5!

Congrats on the upgrade! I agree that the interior and overall quality of the G30 is far superior than the previous model. You'd expect some sort of step up when entering into the next generation of any model of car, however, this generation change in particular was REALLY a step up, IMO.

I haven't had the squeaking that you're talking about so I can't help there. Hope it either goes away or it's something the dealer can reproduce and fix it.

Enjoy your car in good health!

Enjoy your car, I love my M550i. I was just thinking yesterday how nice it was that I didn't have all the door squeaks and dash creaks that my 2016 M4 had. So no noises for me. Sorry you have them, but the M4 forum has lots of fixes if you search there for door creaks/squeaks.

Thanks! Yeah, I am pretty sure the dealer will have no trouble hearing it. All you need to do is touch the armrests, basically. I am hopeful it can be easily remedied, maybe I will even get some fresh new door panels out of it.

Just received my 2020 G30 M550i coming from an F80 M3 and loving the difference. Luxury and power are an intoxicating combo! My passenger side door is squeaking like crazy though and am taking to dealer to fix.

I know you have to break in the M cars for a few thousand miles before letting them rip, but was told by dealer you don't have to break in the M550i...anybody have an opinion on this? Seems odd to me.

You'll definitely get differing opinions on break-in. I followed the recommendations in the owner's manual, as I have done with all the new cars I have purchased over the years. That has, knock on wood, resulted in very good results so far.

FYI I noticed that anytime I have a passenger in the car, I don't really hear the door arm rest squeak, but a bit weird since my wife is not touching the arm rest so makes no sense as to why having a passenger eliminates the sound. So I concluded it's because when you shut the door you pull from the arm rest, so anytime I drive the car solo I do a nice aggressive passenger side door shut from the driver seat and more often than not it kills the sound for that trip.

Congrat's on the car, and I'm happy that you don't miss the M5. I'm (kind of) in the same boat. I had a '13 M5 for two years, which I bought after an '11 550. While I loved the M5, I felt that the 550 was better able to put the power down due to the AWD. I got rid of the M5 a little over two years ago and got a 340, which is decent car but it's not for me. I ordered a '20 M550 in August and it's on the water now. I test drove the '19 and loved the power, so I'm pretty excited about the bump in numbers in the '20. Hopefully I'll have it in November.

This car is just soo consistent, it's not so brutal like our M5's were, not as rude of a car, being more refined. I find myself missing some of those aspects yet this car does the trick for me. I didn't know the 2020's were getting bump in power when I leased mine in May! I saw that about a month later and got sad for a minute and ordered the Dinan V2 and been a happy camper.

You sure it's not the seat belt on the passenger side?

Lol. I too had the F10 M5 and that thing was so crude they used to tell me to turn off my engine at drive throughs.
It’s like using a war ship for a luxury cruise.
