First oil change
I've driven about 2,000 miles on my new M550i. I recently got a oil change reminder saying it will be due in 7,000 miles.
That seems like a ridiculously long interval for the first oil change after break-in. |

BMW will pay for the condition based service oil replacement so if you do get the oil changed, don't let them reset the oil service or you'll never get your "free" BMW service.

Am amused to find that the ‘must change my oil every 5k or less’ mentality is alive & well on the G3x forum
Obviously it’s up to you guys how often you change your oil but imho there’s no need to do oil & filter changes at 5k miles or so, yeah ok it won’t do any harm but I also don’t believe it’ll improve the longevity of the engine. I owned my e92 N54 35i for just over 12 years & changed the oil (Castrol Edge) according to the condition based oil servicing which, dependant upon how hard it had been driven ranged from 9-13,000 miles or every two years. The last oil change it had only done 3,600 miles but that was over 2 years. The 35i was producing 380bhp for 8 of the years I had it & was taken to Santa Pod 3 or 4 times a year pre Covid. It had done 126,700 miles when I sold it 3 weeks ago & was still running very nicely indeed & I suspect that it’d be good for at least another 100,000 miles, despite the condition based oil servicing I shall continue to change the oil in the G31 according to the condition based oil servicing, only caveat to that is I will change oil & filter as the last oil & filter change was carried out by the supplying non franchised dealer I bought it from & for all I know they may have just reset the service menu & not changed the oil or used ‘cheap’ oil to save a few quid

It's my money 2 There is no such thing as too often oil changes damaging an engine. The reverse is not true. 3"imho there’s no need to do oil & filter changes at 5k miles or so, yeah ok it won’t do any harm but I also don’t believe it’ll improve the longevity of the engine" I'll take fresh oil over an opinion. Not trying to be a smart ass, but brand new fresh oil is better than 5,000 mile oil, maybe marginally, but like I said, it can't hurt.

2, Yes not changing the oil often enough could damage a engine…eventually although are BMW condition based oil changes to infrequent? My experience with the e92 & having covered over 80,000 miles in it leads me to believe that they aren’t. 3, Yes, an opinion based on BMW Engineers , oil companies research & development & my own experience, which I’d take over internet rumours. Not trying to be a smart arse either & your right it can’t hurt the engine, just the planet & your wallet

Having an undergrad degree in mechanical engineering, 5k miles. They recycle oil over at this end of the planet, don't know what they're doing at your neck of the woods. The engineers at BMW will tell you the same thing about 5k miles (off the record). Sales and marketing will tell you 10k. They're in the business to sell product, not to ensure you get 250k trouble free miles out of your vehicle.
Don't get me started on the save the planet bull chips. Why don't you get ahold of Google, Meta and Twitter (all unnecessary companies and quite frankly have damaged society) and ask how much electricity/coal/natural gas they burn per year to generate their electricity. Thier server farms burn through a staggering amount of it. I know, I did the analysis. These companies/executives are hypocrites. If they were serious, they would shut their companies down. They make everyone's oil changes look minuscule. Remember, oil is recycled. The seas are rising (not) and that's why all these climate bullshit artists have multimillion dollar waterfront properties? Thier mansions have at least 10 central air-conditioning units running all the time. They all have private jets...If they were really concerned, they would take a hot air balloon or sail. Every day I'm reading about some catastrophic EV fire burning for hours. I bet those fires are carbon neutral. Here's a sample of what's going on in my hood. All sustainable and renewable I bet...they love to use those meaningless words....because it makes them feel better. https://www.ctinsider.com/hartford/a...0EV%20FireSafe. Here's a dandy. 600 gallons of water per minute to put this Tesla fire out. It took 42 minutes to extinguish...do the math. All that water draining off the fire and pouring into our sewer systems is carbon neutral and environmentally sustainable/friendly. https://patch.com/connecticut/stamfo...ire-department How much more will converting to EV's save the planet over the internal combustion engine? You will never see the answer unless you do the analysis yourself. The juice isn't worth the squeeze. Sheep following each other over the cliff. That said, I do believe in doing things cleaner and more efficiently. But let's be smart about it. As of today, it's a bunch of virtue signaling nonsense. For me, 5k oil changes. |

I totally agree! I usually make some popcorn and watch the other go at it. It's a subject people are very passionate about.

I just pop off about the environmental stuff because a lot of these people preaching to us are the worst offenders. Plus I just like to bust chops I totally understand your good intensions and we should be aware of our impact...but we need to do it right...and I haven't seen that yet from the big companies and the US politicians. |

First oil change
If I'm keeping the car, oil is getting changed every 5k-7k depending on the workload. Like Broesph said better to do it more than less. This car is leased so whenever they want to come pick it up and change it, they can have it.
Good to see 2022Marsh550i took his crazy pills today. I love it when he takes an extra dose like today.
