BMW 530e plug-in behavior

Hi all,
I just bought a used 2019 530e and noticed something strange when I charged it. After the initial charge to 100%, the car would "wake up" and continue to charge for a few more minutes every hour or so. I noticed that because my EV charger would email me on charging start/stop so I have been getting a stream of emails from the charger for this car. I used this charger for two i3 in the past and they never exhibited this "trickle charge" phenomenon. Any thoughts? The car seems to work fine otherwise.

Thanks,

YP

I would "guess" that you have a vampire load causing more than a tiny drain, on the 12v battery, causing the HV battery to recharge the 12v. battery. Or, similar load on the HV battery which is probably pre-conditioning related. In any event a "fault".

It does sound like a vampire drain. However, I don't believe that the high voltage batteries charging the 12v battery started until the LCI. I have seen postings (I think from Logical) that contained excerpts from the LCI manual; I don't have that information in my 2018 manual.

Thanks guys. I guess this is not a normal behavior then. I will ask the dealer to check it out when I bring it in for oil change next week.

Yeah, I've posted about that. The verbiage does appear in the manual for my Pre-LCI MY2020 530e. I included that verbiage for reference.

Cool. I didn't know I can maintain the 12v battery this way. May be my 12v circuit is draining the current somehow. Will check with dealer to see if they can find the root cause of this.

One of the good things about the 530e. On a non daily driven Porsche, I had to keep a battery maintainer on all the time to keep from needing a new 12v battery every 2 years. The normal resting vampire loads on that car would drain the battery in 3-4 weeks. I leave my 530e at the airport for 3 weeks with no concern about coming back to find a flat 12v battery, even though it doesn't have a large resting vampire load. I run the 530e on "Battery Control" on the way to the airport so that I leave the car with an 80% HV battery charge.

What MY do you have Ted?

The verbiage shows up in my MY2020 manual, but it makes sense to me that this is a universal truth for the 530e and the manual was updated to include missing verbiage in later MY cars.

I have the pre-LCI 2020.

I said pre-LCI but I think right before the LCI they changed out the battery package to a larger package. That might account for the change in the manual. I believe that Logical has the larger battery.
