Get the 1D X first and then go for the 500-II. Together, they're amazing. Good as the 5D3 is, the 1D X operates with no delays and increased tracking accuracy. The IS on the 500-II makes it where you'll never use a tripod again.

Remember though, I have a 1D4, which I am pretty sure I would be happy with for a while with the big gun. Unlike the glass, eventually some used 1D X's will appear on the market at a decent price, and then I would consider it.

You're right, I forgot about the 1D4.

Yes, the incredible sound of this makes it a candidate for video.

For a still, I agree with going wider and then doing something like a 2:1 aspect ratio crop. The 400mm leave wanting to see more of the gaggle (flock?).

I agree. It was a quick reaction shot with my 1D4 that was in my lap, as I hadn't got out my 5D2 yet, which had the 24-105 on it. I would use the 5D3 with either the 24-104 or maybe even the 16-35 for video.

I will go back up there at least once more this winter and see what I can get.

I would think you do not want to be standing under them when they take off like that.

A few days ago marked the 5th anniversary of the day I brought these two little fuzzballs home with me. 2 months later I bought a 40D to get better pictures of them than I was getting with my little point and shoot. They are basically the reason I got back into photography, and the namesakes of my Flickr page. 5 years on and now with a large pelican case full of gear, I can definitely say it was one of the better decisions i have ever made.

Our two originals just turned 12. Both still healthy, although Maxie's bad knees keep him grounded.

I just bought a big Pelican case (1650) and it's just about full now, too. At least now everything is in one place, more or less.

Picking up one and let alone two black cats is a wonderful thing. I'm sure Lenny and Carl are proud of you making them the most sought after models on the internet.

Playing around with the 400 5.6 + 1.4x TC III to see how the f8 AF works. Not too shabby. But f8 and 1/1250s on a gray day is tough.

On a side note, I had forgotten that I had taped the pins in the 1.4x TC so my 6D would AF. My first few shots registered at f5.6 before I realized why I wasn't seeing f8. It didn't make much difference speed wise, but I had more focus points available to use when it was showing f5.6. I'm not sure how well they would have worked, though.

^^^Nice that they don't molest the tree. We tried setting up a tree the first year we had Christmas here at home (2004, maybe?). Within hours the tree had no ornaments within 3 ft of the base. After we swept up the 3rd smashed one, we gave up and put the tree away. Haven't tried it again since.

We've been pretty lucky with that. Even the first day we let them out of the box when they brought them home, it was already up. They were curious about the tree, and maybe batted a few low hanging ornaments, but quickly just let it be. Now Carl loves to lay under it and watch the birds out back. Lenny doesn't seem to care one way or the other. He just sits in his chair and takes it all in.
