What oil should I use? LL-01 FE 0W-30, or LL-01 5W-30?

Manual recommends LL-01 FE 0W-30, however upon reading some forums I’ve read that people experience increased oil consumption, and that LL-01 is recommended if you’re driving hard.

There is no such thing as LL-01 0W-30 correct?

If I use 5W-30, will it void warranty?

Thanks.

The official oil for the N63 is LL-01FE. Ignore the viscosity, it is the BMW approvals that matter. While under warranty BMW does state you must use LL-01FE (FE is for Fuel Efficiency) in North America for warranty coverage.

Outside North America, LL-01 and LL-04 are alternately approved in the BMW SBS "technically suitable engine oils". My 2018 is out of warranty so I have switched to LL-01 and this year will move to LL-04. Both offer more protection with a High Temperature High Sheer rating of 3.5 or greater. LL-01FE is specified as 3.0 or greater (BMW doesn't say what the HTHS is exactly on their oil).

Again, ignore viscosity, what is important is the approval rating. So while under warranty, stick with LL-01FE. Out of warranty go immediately to LL-01 or LL-04.
LL-01 oils can be found in 0w-30, 5w-30, 5w-40 and 0w-40. LL-04 oils are almost exclusively found in 5w-30 and 5w-40.

Again, for LL-01FE oils, BMW and Liqui Moly versions do not give specifics on the actual HTHS rating...only that it is equal to or greater than 3.0.

If you want a higher rated LL-01FE oil, Motul claims theirs is 3.4 which is very good.

What I have been doing for my first oil change outside the dealer free ones, is I used a factory Mahle oil filter and Quaker State Euro 5w-40 LL-01 I picked up at WalMart for $23 per 5 quart jug (car requires two jugs). I am performing my next (annual) oil change in a couple weeks and will be using a factory Mahle oil filter and Pennzoil Euro L 5w-30 LL-04 oil purchased on sale from Amazon, but also available at WalMart. Both are good oils and consider them superior to any LL-01FE oil. Its not that LL-01FE is bad, it is a good oil, its just that LL-01 and LL-04 are better. You just might suffer a 1% or 2% lower fuel economy.

I think the 'recommended' oil is different depending on what region you are in.

I found this article very usefull in determining what oil to use:

FWIW, I use 5-30 LL-04 on my 3L diesel.

This is the BMW approved oils. You can find based on engine. There are some exceptions for various countries and markets.

LL-01 and LL-04 are approved for most G30 gasoline engines (B58 and N63) outside of North America.
It is presumed BMW sticks with LL-01FE (fuel economy) oils in North America for meeting CAFE restrictions on fuel economy.
