Telephone circle now a number pad?

I was just placing a call the other day and noticed that the dial pad that always was circular changed to a square number pad.
Is this something OTA or ?? I don't remember making any changes.
Attached is photo of "new" dial pad.

Assuming your signature is right the MY2019 doesn't support OTA.

Was there a recent dealer update done?

Did you move your hand near the screen? If so it detects this and changes the display. Same thing happens when entering a destination using the rotary controller and then when you point near the screen it switches to keyboard layout.

I did have my hand near the screen when it changed. I guess I never have done that before until now.
Odd.

I'm not sure if it's linked to having gesture control

it's a small feature but actually quite a useful one - it is way faster than the dial to enter information

I use voice activation to dial a number which I've found very good. I had this feature on my e39 with the bmw Bluetooth upgrade )official not third party) and even back then it was as good as it is today

I guess number are easily understood in co parison to words

Just say
"Dial number"

Then speak the number

Then say "dial"

This change likely happened due to a software update that was automatically pushed to your phone by your mobile carrier or phone manufacturer.

There are a few possibilities for what prompted this dial pad change on your device:

Your phone received an over-the-air (OTA) software update that included a refreshed dialer app with an updated dial pad layout. OTA updates can modify and improve various aspects of the phone's software.
The dialer/phone app on your device was updated through your phone's app store or marketplace. App updates can sometimes redesign elements like the dial pad.
You may have a new default phone or dialer app, either manually installed or set as default, that uses a different dial pad layout than your previous dialer.
A system-level update was applied that included UI changes to the dialer across the operating system.

Does gesture control have to be activated for this to work? I turned mine off because I didn’t like it but this feature might be worth re activating it.
