Has anyone tried retrofitting the newer style G20 BMW shift knob on the G30?

Had a loaner recently and I prefer the feel of the G20 knob being more solid/less plastic. Pic below to illustrate.

If it's anything like the M5 retrofit, it has been done before, but not 100% successfully. I think it has something to do with it not being able to go into manual mode and shifting.
