Yes -- I think I'll start going with 0W30 going forward based on an update from BMW on the recommendation.

I did also incur an additional one-time cost for the 86mm - 16 flute filter end cap wrench of $10.39 at my local auto parts store.

I'm reading a lot of threads on bobistheiolguy.com about the difference between the BMW 0w-30 LL-01 FE, and the various BMW and aftermarket LL-01 oils (5w-30 and 5w-40) and the LL-01 spec oils have a higher HTHS and more robust additive package. Basically the LL-01 FE oils were weakened from LL-01 to meet fuel economy standards. BMW also updated the LL-01 spec a couple years ago, and now no 0w-xx oil meets LL-01. So all the previous LL-01 oils that were 0w-30 and 0w-40 like Mobil 1 Euro and Castrol Edge all lost LL-01 approvals. The more knowledgeable users there are advising stick with LL-01. As soon as I am out of warranty I will be using an LL-01 oil, either Pennzoil Euro or Quaker State Euro (they are basically the same) 5w-30 or 5w-40.

Great info! Looks like I'll keep doing what I'm doing, then.

And $4,000 grand for that lift! Nice set-up. I would change my own oil too if I had that!

They look like pan stands to catch fluid, not supports.

Just an extra safety measure. I use one on the front and one on the rear of any car I put on the lift. They are essentially jack stands. The lift is rated for 10,000 pounds.

You're gonna have to do 31 oil changes to offset the cost of that lift.

The lift was here long before the BMW. I'm a hobbyist and like to tinker. I also built my Factory Five Cobra replica and like to have the right tools to do the job. This lift gets used! By the way, I'm more than happy to let the dealer do pre-paid maintenance, but refuse to pay dealership rates for things I can do myself once out of the coverage period. I also have the tools to do top-side oil changes after buying my last Mercedes Benz that required (recommended) top-side oil changes.

All good! I am just being a wise ass, I am sure that lift has many uses over many different cars. I just got a kick out of the way your thread read to add up to $64 and then I scroll down to a $4,000 Bendpak! That thing would be so handy. Regardless of the price of paying someone to do stuff, just having the option to so easily do it yourself. Even something like rotating tires and swapping out winter/summer set-ups, that lift would take the stress of bringing to the local goodyear shop and having the newbie drive your car in and out.

I used 5W-30. I'll see if I can find 0W-30 for the next service.

Kick ass garage bud ! My next house will have something like that for sure. I've always wanted my own lift for maintenance and mods.

It's my understanding that this is the BMW recommended oil and used at dealership oil service.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...il-07510017866

I use Liqui Moly 5w-30

That is the correct BMW oil. The YouTube guy "Engineering Explained" just did a nice video on direct injection and the type of oil that's best for DI cars. LL01FE does not have the latest additive package/pass the latest tests as far as I can tell.

ILSAC GF-6A or API SP are the latest requirements we want our oil to meet.

It depends on your goals. LL01FE IS the correct factory oil for the G30 and will maintain your warranty. But, the older LL01 has a better additive pack and a higher HTHS rating (high temperature, high shear). LL01 oils should offer better protection, but less fuel efficiency. LL01FE, with FE for "fuel efficiency" is more of a "compromise" oil.

See my post #4 above for more details.

I'm going to drop my oil this weekend. I think I have everything I need but would appreciate a check list validation.

* OEM Mahle oil filter cartridge (comes with a rubber ring and a washer)
* 8L of Castrol Edge M 5w-30
* Oil cap removal tool
* Ramps

Do I need a new sump plug / washer? e.g are they use once crush fit washers or can I re torque?

I don't change my own oil, but I think the M550 N63TU2/3 takes 9 quarts or 8.5 liters. You may want to get a bit more than 8L. Of course it never all comes out, but you would not want to be short in the moment.

The OEM filter kit I bought included the drain plug washer. Oil capacity with filter is 9.5 quarts. I put 9 quarts in and check the level through I-Drive and add until full.

Filter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007XB3WEA...v_ov_lig_dp_it
Filter Cap Tool: https://www.amazon.com/Steelman-0613...%2C100&sr=8-25
Oil (my choice): https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pennzoil-...w.ds&step=cart

Remember, it's a car; not a Swiss watch!
