Mileage to avoid? N57
Hey guys
Currently in the market for a new daily and am pursuing a 17-18 X5 35d. Not super specific but looking for an M sport with high options so not a ton locally to choose from. What mileage would you avoid? My current budget allows for 45-60k miles. What is the general number that we start seeing issues in these cars?

Not that familiar with X5 diesels but most BMWs start having maintenance issues at 100K miles.

I'm around 150k miles at the moment (M50d) and there's nothing major going on. Just a basic maintenance, oils, filters, one injector, control arms, suspension bags. Pretty much that's it.
Touch wood, of course. |

I wouldn't want one over 80K unless I had proof of a proper transmission service. That kind of mileage seems to be the cutoff point where it is considered too late the change the trans fluid without causing problems.

You’re going to get answers all over the place and it really comes down to how well it was maintained and a little luck. I sold my e53 4.8is with 185k miles and had no major issues with it. Get a car with good record keeping, in good shape and keep up the maintenance. If mileage is a big concern for you get one with as little miles as you can afford.

I'm just gonna say to find one under 50k so you still have warranty (depending on the year of course).

Bought our N57 diesel with 85k on it. Immediately replaced the battery, 2 injectors, and I just finished the transmission service at 88k miles. If you want your truck to drive properly the entire time you own it, service the trans. ZF recommends 60-80k intervals.
As mentioned above, you could have 40k mile sh*tboxes and 100k mile creampuffs with no issues. Find a good one up front if you don't work on it yourself. I tend to buy high mileage needing work to save on buy-in as I maintain them and don't pay that labor cost. Your buying methods/preferences will depend on your particular situation. |

This is proving to be more difficult than I anticipated. Saw. 3 M-sports today. 2 were 2018, 1 was 2017. All 3 under 50k miles. All 3 destroyed. Interior horrendously scratched, exterior front and rear bumpers banged up and wheels curbed. Anyways, not discouraged yet. This is part of the used car process. Thanks everyone for their answers - this is helping me in my process. This will be my second (concurrently owned) bmw. My other being an e92 M3 with built 4.4 stroker and gintani supercharger . Looking forward to finally having some torque in my life

If you get one make sure you keep up to date with the fluids. Transmission, transfer case, both differentials. Make sure your oil change intervals are low not those crappy 20k intervals bmw says. The more often you do that the better it is for everything and especially the timing chain . All though most people are saying it needs replacement around 200k KM.
The fuel pump Cp4 is a Pure trash. If the pump goes bad the whole fuel system gets grenaded and it's a 8k job out of warranty. My friends 18 x5d failed at 40K KM. You will want to replace it with either a updated CP4.2 pump or an over seas m550d pump. Or the new fuel filter kit made by tunemyeuro. It saves the entire fuel system just your low pressure fuel pump will need to be changed Rear air bags don't tend to leak to quite often but you never know. Few hundred bucks if you DIY yourself. As for emissions that is just something that depends on you , plenty of guys are tuned and deleted and have achieved great results. I'd recommend joining the Facebook group North American bmw diesel owners group. That's where you will find the majority of m57/ n57 owners |
