Bowers and Wilkins Sound System
I just purchased a 2022 BMW M550i with the B&W Diamond surround system. Awesome sound! The speakers light up with the car’s ambient lighting but will show only white. I spoke with the dealer who told me that they used to be able to change colors with the car’s colors, but the chip shortage now prevents that, at least from the factory. I’m thinking that the lights are still capable of color changing. Has anyone accomplished this through coding? Thanks in advance.

If it were as simple as coding (which is simply flipping settings in the car’s configuration) then it would have been enabled from the factory. The chip shortage doesn’t prevent BMW from making changes to their configuration files…
This will likely require a hardware change due to different LED modules being used among other things… Just accept it as a casualty of the time as it isn’t likely worth the hassle. |

Thanks for the feedback. It’s not that big of a deal, but the colored speaker lights would look nice. I’ve seen them online and just couldn’t understand why the feature wasn’t available in my car. As I wrote, the sound from the system (which is of course the real reason why I bought it) is awesome.

Bowers and Wilkins speaker colors
I’ve seen videos where the option to check or un-check a “white only” box comes up under B&W in iDrive 7 interior light controls. It does have ID7, but it’s not there on my car.
I agree with the comment that it’s likely just a casualty of the times, but will continue to explore it just a bit further before I totally give up. It really isn’t worth going through that much trouble. Great car and great sound! Thanks! |

B&W speakers in G30's were always white and only white. Your dealer doesn't know what they are talking about.

My '21 B&W from not shows white. I know there are some aftermarket fake B&W that are RGB if you want to maybe swap the light rings out.

Bowers & Wilkins Sound System
I called the BMW “genius” hotline yesterday (#844-443-6487) and asked about the B&W color changing speaker issue. After a short battle with the automated phone maze system, I was transferred to an agent who was unbelievably knowledgeable and helpful. He was located in Ohio.
I explained the issue and the things that I had seen on-line about the previous color changing capabilities. He really didn’t have an answer for me, except to say that there was nothing in his documentation to show that this was related to the chip shortage. He understood exactly where I was coming from and actually googled some of the videos I’d seen so he could see for himself what I was talking about. He even sent me a link on my phone where he could see through my camera, with my permission, and walk through the settings with me. He’s as confounded as me and said that he’s going to escalate this up the chain and get me an answer within a few days. He also thinks this really should work and may be just a software issue. Again, he saw the video I did that showed a checkable “white-only” box under the interior lighting section for the ambient lighting. I don’t know if this service is just available for a period after you buy a BMW but, just from my phone number and e-mail address, he knew exactly what car I had and which features it had in it. Again, no answer on the speaker lighting yet, but it was a great experience. He also helped me on another issue with the Spotify app in the car. It kept dropping off. Apparently, if you’re logged into Spotify on your iPhone and also on the car app at the same time, the system “fights” with itself over which one to draw from as the primary Spotify source. He suggested that I log out of Spotify on my phone when I’m in the car. I did that and not only did it solve the problem, but I realized that it was likely pulling mostly from the phone using Bluetooth and is now getting the digital feed directly from the car app. As a result, it sounds even better than before! Many thanks to the BMW genius who is helping me! |

OEM (original/real) B&W systems have only white LED color. After market fake B&W covers come with RGB LEDs. That is also the best way to differentiate fake from real

Just as an update to this, I received a call back from BMW today and was told that (according to their documentation) the light color changing feature on the B&W sound system was not removed and should still be functional. They suggested that I discuss it with a BMW service manager, who might be able to get the option turned back on in the software. Not sure how this will work out, but I’ll post an update if I have one.
