They certainly could if they wanted to. My 2016 Corvette Z06 has a couple of alternative displays one can use from graphs to traditional dials. I keep mine traditional and the HUD display mimics it. BMW should offer this, or they will run the risk of losing sales. --Bob

100% agree. While I prefer analog over digital, I don't mind digital gauges when its done right. Look at an Audi Virtual Cockpit or Mercedes Digital Gauges and they look years ahead of BMW in screen quality, but also functionality, ease of use, and customizability.
I much prefer the digital gauges from the earlier 5er, X3, and 7er models. BMW is so ahead in iDrive but their gauges are awful. It's not a deal breaker but it is something you look at and use everyday.

The nice thing about screens is they are upgradable without changing out the hardware. Hopefully BMW upgrades them over time and adds a few better options. We can hope anyway.
