Ride

How is the ride in Comfort Setting on this car? I asked this in the 7 forum also. I have a bad back looking for a car that is comfortable, not stiff and sporty all the time. Any opinions here, I have not driven one since 2017?

Thanks ahead!

That is a subjective topic and will depend upon what sort of ride you prefer along with other factors such as wheel size and whether you run flats or not.

I would suggest you try it yourself as only you will be able to decide on what you think of it.

Thanks for all replies. Will try a test ride knowing RF's are more firm.

Unless you have an adaptable suspension the ride does not change, only the transmission shift points to give you better acceleration. In the sport setting the seat side wings (bolsters) will close around you to hold you in place better.
However, the sport seats are in my opinion not as comfortable as the multi contour seats.

I answered you in the other forum also. But I will add that I have the adaptive dampers. The ride is fine for me whether in adaptive or sport mode but I like a firm ride. I think you might still have trouble with any of the three major German marks.

As I noted in the other forum, you might try Lexus or Lincoln.

I just got out of a F01 750i and into the G30 540i, standard suspension. Ride quality is comparable; the 7 has a longer wheelbase and so is more subdued but I put conventional tires on the 5 so it's actually slightly better on small imperfections.

You really need to test drive both and decide for yourself. 7 series depreciation is breathtaking.

One more thought. If you want one of the German marks, you could change out the tires to higher profile non runflat tires that would give you a softer ride. But I don't know how you would be able to test drive this to see if it would work for you.

For the best ride, stick with 18" rims. Non-RFTs if that combo exists.
Also the adaptive suspension makes a difference in comfort mode but non-RFTs make a bigger difference even if 20" rims like my M550i.

Again, don't just look for non runflats. You want higher profile tires which means modifying the size to try to stay close to the speedometer settings but higher profile tires will make a huge difference for you.

You probably won't find a car with them so if you want to go this way, just plan on new tires.

I have a 2018 540i with the standard 18" RFT. After driving it for two years I can say that the standard suspension handles very well and has an excellent ride quality. Vehicle feels very solid and composed, never feels harsh or brittle. Reminds me a lot of the formula BMW had for the E39 which had an excellent balance between and ride and handling. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being low and 10 being the best, I'd rate the handling a 9 and the ride quality a 10. I've owned many BMWs and this is my favorite BMW I've had to date. You won't be disappointed.

My back isn't great either, and seem to throw it out monthly, which does suck. but it is what it is. I find the ride on my 2019 540 to be lovely but when my back hurts, I throw on the seat heater on high, adjust the lumbar support and turn on the lumbar massage - it really helps. And, if you have a bad back, or for anyone, I've read you should never drive or sit in a car with your wallet in your back pocket. I tried it the other day, without my wallet in my back pocket, and I did feel better actually.
