Hey Guys,
I have the 668M 20" rims on my M550 and am running with performance tires (non run-flat). I live in the NY tri-state and the roads are terrible. I knew there was real risk that came with opting for the 20" but candidly, 19" does nothing for me. Long and short of it, in the last month I've blown three tires. I've been looking at F90's as of recent. Is it just me or does the tire that comes with the 20" rim on that car have a bigger side wall? Thanks!

Have you tried Michelin Pilot Sport 3 ZP? I blew two Goodyear F1s before I switched to these Michelin runflats, and I love them. No more problems.....knock on wood. I have stock sizes, and 668M wheels on my M550i.

These are notes I took reading through tire sizes: All seasons: https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sh....php?t=1364531 For non runflat ultra high performance all seasons I’ve had the Continental DWS06, Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus, and the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. There are advantages and disadvantages for each.... the Conti DWS06 are the best in light snow but not as good with steering response as the Pirelli and Michelin. They’re also very quiet and have a comfortable ride. The Pirelli’s are just as quiet, ride well, and handle a little better in dry/wet but definitely not as good in the snow. Both sets lasted about 25k miles and I’d recommend them. The Michelin’s are the most expensive and have firmer sidewalls. They handle the best in dry/wet but they are noisier and not as good in light snow as the DWS06 in my experience. Different post: https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1684935 I upgraded sidewall when I got my car immediately to the sizes you are inquiring about. 245-40-20 F; 275-35-20 R with no issues. I went with Conti DWS06 NRFT. It's a very nice ride and I live in NYC area. Do it! |

Thanks. I saw an f90 at the dealer today and the side wall is noticeably higher than that on the 668M.
A shame the car only came with one 19" wheel choice.

Bro I feel your pain. Blew 2 in 6 months and I’ve got the 19” rims.
Thinking next lease I’ve got to go to a higher side wall. Just need to do that or accept that 4-5 days a year I’m going to have to derail my life. I have the spare tire kit so I can limp home . Add that if you don’t. Sorry if you mentioned any of this WTLDR. |

I may actually trade out of this thing and get an x5 M50i.

I cannot wait for those combo tire and rim prototypes to be real. I love to DD a sport sedan. But the roads in NY just suck. I can only be hyper locked on the typography for so long.

No argument that 20" wheels look great, but in the real world that I live in, I try to go 18" or even less. Aside from durability, there's also ride comfort and replacement cost that are both better on the smaller tire.
Unfortunately, the deal on the 540i that I wanted with the 18s fell through and I ended up getting one with 19s. They look awesome, sure, but... oh well. If it weren't a lease, I'd downsize the wheels.

I've always been hyper sensitive to rim styling (arguably too much so) - so I bought the wheel and tire insurance and went with the 668M.
That said - I can't be going to the service center every few weeks to replace tires. The x5 M50i has a good compromise rim option (a 21") that sits between the 20 and 22.

All - The added 5% sidewall is a perfect solution / compromise. My post was one of the ones copied above BTW. Since October-19 no issues and I literally drive in NYC and on the Grand Central, LIE, I95 3-4 days a week. Whether you go with the Micheline's or the Conti's its up to you. The tire looks great filling out the wheel well. I dont have any pics of mine but there are plenty on the tire forum (try searching for fan51 posts - I think he has good pics). Either way this is the way to enjoy the m550 668 RIMs instead of having to swap out the car etc.

The F90 indeed has a higher profile tire and it makes a huge difference. I don't feel ANY of the bumps or potholes I felt in my M550 (not to mention they sounded like explosions when I did hit them). I had the run flats on my M550. The tires are too low profile on that car....I always wondered WTF was going on with the G30 because my M6 Gran Coupe (I had that before my M550) also never had issues going over bumps and potholes....and the roads here are horrible. The G30 was the worst car I've had since I used to do like 25 profile tires way back when. I probably replaced 5 or 6 tires due to bubbles (I think run flats bubble in the sidewall as opposed to pop like a normal non-run flat). I never had to replace a tire for damage on my M6 and don't plan on having to do it in my M5, either, based on my driving experiences thus far .

Which option did you go with, and can you give me the exact specs? Is the sidewall visibly higher? Can you shoot me a pic? Would be hugely appreciated. Thanks again.
