Who switched from RF to Regular tires?

I'm not impressed with the RF that came with the car. Loud, sloppy and not the smoothest. I do have roadside assistance, just need my trunk space and not sure what I would do if I had a flat. Keep a spare at home? What do you guys do in this case?

I went from factory 20s to 19" Nina runflats. I bought all the components for a compact spare and built my own enclosure. The tires ride better and are quieter. Handing feels basically the same with the caveat that I live in a horrible place for spirited driving.

I have no room for a spare or jack. I could keep it at my house. Sucks

I have a 2019 540i xdrive with 245/40/19 non runflat tires all around... I currently have the spare tire option but previously had a 2015 535i xdrive with the same size non runflat tires and have always carried a portable air compressor with a foam tire can for emergencies. I check my tires every few weeks and adjust accordingly with the air compressor instead of going to a gas station. Amazon sells the Viair 85P for about $50 which is well worth it. Coupled with the BMW and Geico roadside assistance I felt I was pretty well covered. I also had a blackjack plug kit just in case but never had to use it.

Other than the occasional nail and slow leak that I could fill with air temporarily to get me to my tire shop for an inside patch the only time I had a huge issue was when both driver side tire sidewalls were shredded by a pothole and I needed a flatbed to my tire shop for tire replacement. Since it was the sidewalls runflats wouldn't have helped the situation.

I previously experienced and have heard so many horror stories about runflat sidewall bubbles, bent wheels, blowouts, terrible ride quality, expensive replacement, wheel/tire insurance, etc. that I avoid them like the plague. There are many cars that don't have spare tires due to cargo space/weight considerations and don't have runflats as standard equipment. I generally think if you maintain your tire pressure/condition and are careful where you drive you're more likely to be trouble free than if you frequent construction sites, drive down alleys, or neglect the upkeep with psi and tread. Just my 2 cents...

Swapped RF for Michelin cross climate on an E91. Night and day. G30 was 17 inch and non rf by choice. Fantastic ride. Have gunk and pump and breakdown in case.
Two tyres replaced with rf on e91 under warranty. None in 3 years on g30. Country roads too.

I have non-runflats on my f06 (much better driving experience vs runflats) and I went with a BMW Tire Mobility kit, tire plug kit, and AAA roadside service.

Unless I have a sidewall blow out...hopefully the air compressor and/or the tire sealant, or tire plug kit can get me to a repair shop or home or safely off a busy road to await roadside help.

I switched my M550i from Goodyear F1 RFT to Michelin Pilot AS/3+. I had ordered the car with the spare in anticipation of doing that. Note I wanted the specific rims so that forced the tire choice from the factory.

The ride is improved with far less crashing over potholes. Handling is a match, even going with the all season. I can also deal with light winter conditions. My only complaint is the AS/3s are a bit noisy at speed but they've gotten a bit better now. Or I'm used to it

The obvious downside to the spare is about 3" less height in the trunk. A toolbox I carry for autocross and other events just barely fits, so not much height.

Note the tires were less than a month old when I got a screw in one. So now it runs with a plug/patch. I didn't get a road hazard warrenty with the Michelin but at least I still have coverage on the wheels.

Other than the births of my children, switching away from run-flat tires was the happiest day of my life. I hated them that much.

Immediately upon taking the delivery of my brand new 2019 M550i, I had the stock summer Goodyear Formula run-flat (RF) tires replaced with all-season (A/S) Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 rubber.

That accomplished two things:

(1) The Continental tire rides better, less likely to develop sidewall defects.

(2) By having A/S tires on the car now, I do not need to get another set of very expensive wheels + tires for winter, and then have to go through bothersome/expensive wheel storage & switching twice a year. Because I drive the car very little in winter, the A/S Contis have perfectly adequate snow/ice grip for my needs.

For some unknown (but happy) reason my car came with an emergency tire kit neatly organised in the trunk. A strange thing that was since the car came shod with RF tires too. I certainly did not ask for the kit, nor did I know I could get it. I guess there must be some nice folks working at BMW who occasionally like to give random gifts to their customers.

If I wanted a spare and make a kit in the trunk, is there a cost effective option. $200 or less. What's the easiest method you think?

There is a BMW spare tire kit, comes with the little wheel, jack, wrench etc. I have one sitting in the closet. It wouldn't fit (clear the brakes) on my F01 750i but it may work on the G30. I bought a plastic cover to, you know, cover it, and I just toss it in the trunk if I need it on those rare long trips.

Otherwise, I've always got the Slime kit with the pump and bottle of green goo. I also have a little plug kit for the M2, since it came OE with real tires (as all M cars do). Used it once just to see if it would work, and it was fair, not great.

But I'm firmly in the "I hate runflats" camp.

Don't we all get a few yrs road side assistance with the new car?

Prior to taking delivery of my new 2020 M550, I swapped the factory Bridgestone Potenza S007 20's summer non-runflats for Continental Extreme Contact DWS 06 20's All-Season. Much better tire for a daily 4-season driver in my opinion. Now, if only I can sell the unused Bridgestone's.

I noticed some of you talking brand. I live in the North East, yet only one snow fall this year. But POTHOLE City. The factory Goodyear RF are definitely wearing well and handling those potholes like a champ. I'm going to run all season non RF, which is better for my riding and dealing with huge potholes. Michelin pilot sport a/s 3 plus vs continental extremecontact dws06.

Rather avoid a flatbed and hassle, but yes through Verizon, BMW and my insurance. I'd still prefer to do my own fix.

BMW roadside assistance will only tow your car to a BMW dealer in my experience... if you want to be towed to a tire shop you need an insurance roadside assistance. In my case I used Geico when I needed a flatbed to have tires replaced at my tire shop.

Ahh, I always buy the wheel and tire warranty, and in 4 years and 3 cars I've had them replaced by dealer with just $50 deductible. Nails always seem to get in to my tires. I feel like runflats are more sporty but yes the ride is really poor.

I ordered my car M550i, with 19” wheels and the spare tire option. I will replace the RFs with regular tires either when the rears wear-out or after I hit a pot hole and get bulges in the sidewalls like I did when my E60 was new.

I debated this in my head forever......well, at least until I popped the second Goodyear F1 runflat in a few months. I finally decided on Michelin PS3ZP. Still a runflat, but much quieter and smoother, and with sporty performance similar to the PS4S I had on my M4. No need for winter tires in San Antonio. Still mulling over what I will do when they wear out, as the PS4S are significantly cheaper. I, too, have a slime kit, pump and plug repair kit in my car.

I had a similar plan myself. I was going to replace RFTs at around 10K miles but after one full month of dealing with RFTs I am very close to getting rid of them any day now.

The only question is which ones to get? The proven AS3+ or the new Goodyear Exhilarate. According to the latest tirerack tests, Goodyears have the best wet traction and ride more comfortably than AS3+.

I am leaning towards AS3+ currently but may change my mind any moment.

BTW, my car came with newer GoodYear Eagle Sport All-Season runflat tires and the wet grip is exceptional.

My 2020 550 came with 20 inch Michelin RFTs. Swapped them out a week later for +5% sidewall Conti DWS06's. I had them on my S6 and they are a great daily driver tire. Still handles well and are quiet. I leased so I plan to swap back the RFTs before return.
