2020 m550i 60k mile update

Hey guys! My name is Ali this is my very first post ! I own a 2020 m550i , purchased from new century bmw in SoCal . I bought her with 41k miles certified pre owned & after 10 months am currently sitting at 60k miles.

In the short span of 10 months and 19k miles I’ve had the expansion tank leak & had to replace 4 injectors if I’m correct. All covered under CPO warranty . Thankfully .

This car is a monster to daily drive! I’m ecstatic every time I start the car I most def love it! Here’s some pics for ya guys!

Hey bro. Congrats on the ride. I also have a 2020 M550i that I bought CPO. Currently have 43k miles on the car. It’s a fantastic vehicle and I enjoy every time I drive it. They seem to hold up well mechanically if the maintenance is performed. Had to have the spark plugs replaced and that’s it so far.

I’m curious, what “symptoms” resulted in needing new spark plugs? My M550 is at 38k or so.

Had exact same experience at 37k. Probably was unnecessary

Congrats and welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing your services you had to have done. I’m always curious where some of the failures are. Can you elaborate on the injectors? What do you mean by injectors and what were the symptoms that lead to it?

Did you put the 2022 anniversary badges on or did the prior owner?

I’m at 53k. I did the plugs, coolant and engine and cabin filters last week at the dealer. All voluntary and a little early as these things are called for at 60k miles. I’ve literally had almost no issues other than the common ones - coolant leaks and passenger seat restraint issues.

I can tell you that when my expansion tank had a leak, it took out one coil and one injector so the dealer replaced that along with the tank. Probably the same in OP's case.

Ah, got it, probably did the entire bank on the same side as the tank on his. I've yet to experience the tank failure. I feel like I have to be on borrowed time.

Yeah it sounds like it's pretty much guaranteed... Just a matter of time.

My low coolant warning has come up twice. It’s in for service now and I asked him to have them search top to bottom for a leak. If it’s gonna happen, I want it to happen before February for warranty purposes.

On spark plugs - my SA said it’s not about mileage but done in conjunction with a number of oil changes. I can’t remember how many.

That's good to know, helps rationalize me doing it early even though the car didn't tell me to. I'm also tuned, so early can't hurt I guess.

Car does feel a little more peppy, but I am sure that's in my head and I just started driving it again after a long winter, so it always feels extra beasty after driving the 6-bangers all winter or my V8 540 E39 which "only" has 300hp and 6 gears.

Hey , yes it was exactly this! Also the symptoms were a very rough idle like extremely shaky . Sputtering in a sense.

Turns out the expansion tank leaked somehow onto the injectors so they changed out everything for that bank. Sorry I’m no mechanic by any means so just trying to explain as much as possible .
I actually put all the anniversary badges boss! Thanks for noticing hehehe lol

Found out today my expansion tank is leaking. Luckily not too bad before they found it. Yours isn’t the first story I’ve read of it leaking into areas that cause further issues.

Shit I have to look at my expansion tank now. All nervous. My car just had an oil change at the dealership about 2 months ago and they didn’t note it. I’ll check I. The morning.

I’d gotten low coolant warnings twice in maybe the last 3-6 months. After all the other posts about leaks, I had a feeling. So, it wasn’t a totally random find.

The first time I got it, I took it to the dealer to top off. The notification actually went away after it warmed up because the coolant expands. But I took it anyway. They said it was a tad low and topped it off. It also established a baseline and a pattern. So when I went in and told them I had it again a few months later, it was a repeated warning and not a one off. I think these leaks start slow and if you’re paying attention you can catch them. The tech sent me a video and by now he could actually see residue on the hose that had leaked from the seal on the tank. So you should be able to see the residue when it begins to leak out. I’d have looked myself but I was taking it for oil service the next day anyway, so I just let them do it.

I need to figure out where it is! I will do the same and check frequently. I detail my engine frequently, haven't noticed any residue, but then again, I don't even know where this tank it!

No low coolant warnings, so it's probably intact, for now. I have a feeling this will be my first Route 66 claim.
