CA HOV lane stickers for EV range > 30 mi?

I have a recollection of an article several weeks ago that future CA HOV lane stickers would be limited to vehicles with an EPA EV range greater than 30 mi? Can anyone confirm that this recollection is correct. If so, it means that the 530e will not meet this threshold. The last time I looked at CA dealer inventory to see what kind of discounts might be offered, it appeared that the vast majority of 5-series cars were the 530e; as contrasted to the Houston area where there might be one or two in stock. I presumed this was because of the CA HOV lane stickers.
I ask this because if it's so, BMW "might" put the 5th Gen batteries in the LCI 530e to hit the 30 mi target, which would benefit all of us. An EV range of 30 mi would do 100% of my local use. The 2019 530e went from 9 KWh to 12 KWh for the 2020. Word on the next models thread is that all of the tech improvements for the 2021 LCI will already be in place on the 2020 and the major change will be to the appearance. Gen 5 batteries, please.

I am sure the bigger battery in the 2020 was motivated by California changes to ensure the 530e stays on the list of eligible cars. Otherwise, the battery change would have come with the LCI. BMW sells the vast majority of the 530e cars in the US in California (something like 70%+ I thought I read at one point).

I expect the LCI will include additional tweaks to be more efficient with the same battery as the MY2020. As they have to keep the battery weight in check (but it is possible they will have shaved weight somewhere else in the LCI to allow a bigger battery).

Either way, as zeusmontes noted the MY2020 is HOV sticker eligible.

As an old Petrolhead from way back, I never think much about electric cars. I was surprised to discover that the California HOV list includes more than 60 different vehicles and/or models.About a dozen are Teslas and eight are Volvos, but there are quite a few other manufacturers on the list. That certainly underscores how prevalent electric or hybrid vehicles are becoming. We don't seem to have HOV lanes in Illinois (or at least not any I recall seeing) but it is clear that the industry is moving strongly towards electric powered vehicles even it there are relatively few on the roads compared to gas and diesel cars now. My grandchildren are in for an interesting future but sadly will be missing the fun we had working on cars, building engines, tuning cars by the color and smell of the exhaust and the knocking of the engine. Ahh nostalgia....Bob

As I understand it, the 2020 530e has 4th gen batteries, which gave a 33% increase in capacity with no change in size or weight over the 2019 3rd gen. The upcoming 2021 iX3 and the i4 are reported to have 5th gen battery tech which will give another 20% increase with no increase in size or weight. Love to see the 5th gen in the 2021 530e LCI. I like my 2020 530e so much, I'm considering getting another one to replace my 2017 330e when it's lease tolls at the end of June. If the LCI were to get the 5th gen battery and/or the 5th gen motor/control tech, I'd hold off. Otherwise, it's going to be close-out shopping for me.

Makes sense and I can see it happening if the size and weight aren't changing. We should have some solid details around May/June I think.

Recent announcement by BMW that all(?) BMW models using the CLAR platform will get a modification to the CLAR platform, beginning with the 2021 model year TO ACCOMODATE UNDERFLOOR BATTERIES, rather than the under-seat batteries for the PHEV's. Said will 1) allow for larger batteries, 2) restore larger gas tanks for the PHEV's, and 3) restore trunk room. All great changes! I wonder if the LCI 2021 530e will get this change. EOP for the 2020 530e is 6/2020. If this change is, in fact, going to go to the 2021 LCI I would absolutely hold off buying a second 530e unti the LCI. Which means, of course, that BMW will hold any info on the change occurring until mid-2020, if in fact they will make it then, rather than waiting until the full model change. Gonna be an interesting next few months.

I would imagine this would come with the LCI so they don't have to wait for the platform change. But I wouldn't buy the first year of the LCI so they can work out the bugs IMHO. We shall see.

Larger gas tank is nice, but I worry about the weight. The PHEV already has a sizable weight increase from the batteries the shaved tank helps to soften some of that weight gain (and I haven't really been impacted range wise). So it will be interesting to see how they balance the whole equation. Possibly going with less weight and battery capacity depending on what they gain from under floor.

I also hope they crash test the hell out of them as the underfloor batteries can be a bit of a risk (well to be fair Lithium Ion batteries in general are risky).
