Negotiating Price

What is the best way to negotiate price on brand 2019 or 2020 BMW 530e. This is my first Bimmer and new to the site.

Don't k ow which country you are in but in the uk there are several sites where you can put in your details and it will come back with a price from several dealers, one example is carwow.

So do that get the best price and print it out.

If trading in find out what the trade in value is , again print it out.

Then go to the dealers and say you want xxx for your car and want to pay yyy for the new one.
Suggest you also say you don't want any paint coatings( rip off and if you want to go that route go to a retailer separately), you don't want gap insurance as you can get that cheaper elsewhere.

Then just sit there and see what they say. If they question the figures then get out your printouts as your evidence.

They will then know they are dealing with someone who knows exactly what they want and how much they want to pay.

Hopefully they can do a deal like that for you. Be prepared to walk.

I think they personally prefer that approach , less faffing around.

That's what I did anyway

US is more location dependent, I basically called 4 dealer around the area and ask each to match the best price I found then knock another 1k off that

There are several BMW dealers within range of your location. Consider any dealers between San Diego and Los Angeles. Send emails to each with your requirements and your request for their best price. Make sure that incentives are included. If there is a financing incentive, and you don't want to finance, you can do what I did. I had a $4K finance incentive so I did finance my 530e but I paid it off after four months. That stopped BMWNA from going back against the dealership and still got me almost all of the $4K benefit. Let them know the company you work for in case there is a bonus incentive available. Be clear about your options and packages. For a luxury car, that can change the price dramatically so you don't want to be comparing apples and oranges.

The other approach is to do your price homework in advance and then go into the dealership with knowledge and a price point you are willing to pay. Make it clear that this is your price, plus any incentives, and you are walking if you don't get it. Personally, the minute a sales person says he has to go to talk to his manager I am out the door.

Your first decision point, btw, is whether you want something off the lot or you want to order the car. My first BMW was off the lot (sort of...they had to truck it down from a dealer in another state); my current BMW I ordered so I got it as I wanted it. For off the lot, you can check out the packages on the dealer websites.

dealer website usually have crap information about packages though, like you have to piece together what is actually included, especially when you compare different year's vehicle (since package would mean different thing)

Thank you for the info - very helpful. The dealer I'm working with is "friend" and I am considered "VIP referral" by the Manager I'm dealing with. Since this is my first BMW - and I'm in my 50's - would prefer to get a car that is everything on my wishlist. How much more should i expect to pay with a custom build? If I went through BMW financing is there a penalty for paying it off within the first 2 months or so? How much markup is there on extras - various packages?

BMW finance itself has no prepayment penalty. The finance incentive is just a gentleman agreement between you and the dealer (so they get the incentive from BMW), lots car have better discount then order car, but I think you can still get decent amount off on order car, mine was order car and all incentive included was like 10~12% ish off?

Is that 10-12% off MSRP, Dealer invoice, or even Dealer cost?

off msrp, mine was 540, it's very model dependent, don't think you could have gotten 12 off on say M5

Mine is a 530e but with alot of the extras -
- luxury line
- Convenience, Premium, and Executive Packages
- Driver Assistance
- Luxury Seating
- Parking Assistance
- Dynamic Dampner
- HK audio
- Leather dash
Is there anything that I should definetly include - or maybe something I don't really need.

Make sure to try out the luxury seats before ordering them. Very subjective. Some people find regular sport seats more supportive and comfortable, even though they don't have massaging. My wife's '18 Volvo XC60 has luxury massaging seats - definitely more firm than regular ones. I think it's the mechanics inside (wiring, massaging hadware, fans) that take away the space from extra padding.
