Tuning, JB4, Dinan, warranty???

I literally just bought a 2019 M550 and I see so many people have tunes, chips and modifications to the motor.

What is a chip and what is a stage 1 dinan tune?

I don't want to void my warranty but I would like to add some horsepower to the car. Sorry for the rookie question but could anyone tell me what a JB4 is and all this tuning difference and best option I should go for?

My dealer told me any modification involving tuning is 100% going to void the warranty. But one of the guys told me at the dealer if I chip the car and remove it before it goes back to the dealer they will never know. Anyone have any idea what any of this means?

I ended up getting the JB4. Considered the dinan as my local dealer installs and warranties. The JB4 isn't a true ECM tune and can be removed prior to going to the dealer for any service work. It's essentially the same thing as dinan but in my case was about $1500 cheaper. The research I have seen is that the power is better with JB4 and still quite conservative if worried about premature engine parts failure. I would get the JB4 and never look back to be honest.

I just called local dinan dealer they said JB4 is the worst tune you can do on a car, figures a dinan dealer would say that lol. I also spoke with another guy who said he actually tunes the car manually with no external chip module box added and that's the best way to go since he can remove it for $100 if I ever need to get dealer service. any ever heard of this kind if tune? I mainly worried cause I paid extra for 100k mile warranty and would hate to void that

My opinion, a plug&play is much better because you remove it and the car will go for standard settings.
Repro if you have a service and they make some update to the system...gone.
Warranty also gone if they notice any trace Of repro.

the issue with JB4 is that it needs to connect to the OBD sensor I believe - so just an extra piece of work having to fish the wire through the firewall down into the interior..

ok so if I decide to go JB4 would the dealer notice at all if I take the box out if i ever need service?

Am i really going to notice a difference power wise and mainly which JB4 should I buy cause the dinan tune is like thousands of dollars and from what I found it looks like the best HP JB4 they offer is only $799. Am i looking at the correct thing?

Jb4 doesn't back with warranty and it's not DME real tune! It's another piggy back like Dinan

If you "tune" you can end up paying. As of now Dinan is the only piggy that will pay. You cannot tune any car and the dealer in case of a failure, not dig and find a tune was put in, even if re flashed back to stock. Again, spend about 10-20 hours reading to familiarize yourself. jB4 is not a tune, neither is Dinan, they are piggy backs.
DME, evolve, BM3, and others that change your ecu are tunes. Yes you double power increase with a real tune but you need to understand the difference between a piggy and a TUNE. Could cost $30-40k to go with a tune

When you put the jb4 in and then remove it for dealer service. Can they see any trace that it was ever installed?

The general consensus is that if they look hard enough they can tell that it was tuned.

With any tune, even Dinan, if there is an issue with the car and BMW decides it's from the tune, your warranty will not pay for it.

If you have a Dinan tune and BMW decides it's causing the issue, Dinan will pay for it.

What about the insaurance I or we get thru Gieco that covers issues like this if factory warranty doesn't cover a breakage.

From what I understand, Geico mechanical breakdown does cover the cost if bmw won't.

The only caveat is that you can't purchase this insurance unless your car is less than 15 months old AND has less than 15,000 miles.

I already had Geico when I got my M550i and they added it automatically to my policy.

I'm trying to figure out even if it's tuned? I've heard rumors that they do, but hate to find out the hard way. Yes I pay I believe something small like $3 a month for that coverage

Any piggy back system will leave boost faults in the computer. They can find it easily. If you stuff something expensive....believe me...they will dig deep enough to find it

I also have MBI from GEICO. But my understanding is that they would take the same attitude toward a tune. So if the BMW dealership determined that the car was tuned and that the tune contributed to the failure, I think GEICO would also decline to cover it.

Are you suggesting that GEICO will cover a part failure even if the dealership determined that the tune caused or contributed to the failure? That would be terrific if true.

I think I'm going to speak to Geico tomorrow and poke around this subject with them. As in would they cover engine if I didn't put enough oil in engine doing oil change myself. If they cover that you'd think a tune blowing engine would be covered as well? Get a basis of how generous this coverage is that we pay $3 bucks a month for.

Same with Dinan.
They will see values of anything over stock if it's catastrophic failure. Dinan will pay, that's the difference.

Jb4 told me that their tune left marks even if its removed... so dobt be silly mike plis
Every tune will left information in your datalogs that the cars was tuned... its important to clear all logs before visit in bmw. Ots easy but U have to have good guy who will do it for U. It doesnt metter if it is box or proper tune, bm3 or jb4, dinan it will left marks.

Correct if its that big of a concern, get Dinan.

That being tens of thousands of tuned cars out there with almost zero catastrophic failures. The odds are very good that user is safe

Exactly
Everything leaves marks in the DME if there is a major problem. Pay to play. Depends on how deep your pockets are. M550 is fast as it sits. I've had great experiences with BMS! Great intakes, piggy's and spacers with great customer service! Hard to find day in day out over few year period and BMS is definitely solid to say the least. Excellent in my opinion as a long time custommer. A friend went with evolve tune and it's night and day difference compared to my Dinan V2. Do some research on Irman on you tube , pretty cool stuff
