A little late to this party. I purchased what will likely be my last new diesel BMW about a year ago September 11,2018. I've owned a few. The 540d is the best sedan I've driven. Still breaking it in at almost 5,000 miles. Had a small misfire coincidently on my way to have it serviced recently. The dealership was able to see my complaint as it was recorded in the onboard computer. Whatever update was done made what was already an awesome car even better. If anyone out there is having the slightest misfire when cold at low speeds, you might run it by a competent dealership for a checkup. BTW the auto updates we are suppose to get for the Nav are not happening. Had mine done while in for service. It's free for at least the first 3 if not 4 years.

Only 950? I've done 810 miles (about 1,500 KM?) on a full tank...twice.And there was a half gallon left in the tank both times. That was at a steady 65MPH (105KPH?),light traffic, dry roads, etc.

I've had my US-spec 2018 540d for over a year now too. I love it! No major complaints, ~13k miles so far. It was a little weird when BMW removed basically all references and information about it from their site suddenly shortly after I took delivery of the car.

BMW sold so few 540d models in the US (115 is the number I've seen thrown out there) so I think mine is probably the only one with the 4-zone climate and ambient air options, which were special requests I made when I ordered it.

I had to ask for the options separately when putting in the order at the dealership. It required some effort between my CA and a rep at BMW NA but they got it done. Apparently it can be added to most G30 builds.

I got the 4 zones as well and I like it.

Too bad that BMW discontinued diesel engine in North America. Love the Torque and the gas mileage.

Travelling between Manhattan and upstate New York does not require a gas stop as long as my bladder can hold it.

You are right...a unicorn. Take good care of it; it should eventually increase in value.

For us Americans, diesel is something reserved for trucks and buses, not passenger vehicles.

With that said, BMW produces impressive Diesel engines and we get a limited range of diesel models here.. But they find little buyers.

Petrol is much cheaper here than in Europe and we don't get taxed based on engine displacement either.
Just curious, what do your tax based on if not engine displacement like most of the countries?

Taxes differ between states but typically it's based on the cost of the vehicle. Often there's a separate tax (or credit) added at purchase time if the vehicle is a gas guzzler or a credit if it is particularly fuel efficient (such as an EV or hybrid).

I find this post interesting since diesels use compression ignition. Maybe some bad fuel or water in the fuel? Avoid filling up at small "mom and pop" stations if you can. Instead, stick to large stations with a high turnover rate, so you're always getting fresh fuel.
