Intentionally locking key fob in the car

Hi all,

Do you know of a way to intentionally lock the key fob in the car (2017 540i with comfort access). I need to have the car dropped off for me at the airport parking lot and I will pick it up later that day with the other key fob.

Thanks

Maybe try locking the car from the bmw app?

Another option - leave the fob in the trunk.

My G30 w/ Comfort Access won't allow the trunk to lock with the fob in it. You'll get a beep and the trunk will re-open.

The door will also refuse to lock with it in the car.

But if you have the newer key that shuts off after sitting idle for some time it should work after a few minutes locking with it in the vehicle. Just be sure you have the app handy and it has signal to unlock it!

Even manually closing the trunk? Plus, not all G30s have the motorized trunk.

One other thing to consider: with leaving the key in the car...even hidden...if someone breaks in (breaking a window; slim jim; etc) they can now start the car and drive off. Assuming the OP has a key on them, and a friend is just dropping the car off at the airport for them, it might be a wiser idea to just have the friend keep the key and pick it up when they return.

I am not sure on if it happens when I manually close, but I would assume so.

I know all G30s don’t have the motorized trunk, but I thought all with Comfort access would act the same as they all should have the antennas for detecting the key. I believe (but could be wrong) that even the G30 cars without a motorized trunk have a powered trunk latch so it wouldn’t raise the trunk all the way up, but would just unlatch the trunk so it springs back up.

I agree with you that it isn’t a good idea to leave the keys in the car as theft is made super easy if you do.

Well, you learn something new every day! I just tried manually closing, and you're right, it complains and opens the trunk again.

Maybe a silly question, but why do you need to have the key fob left in the car? Can't the drop off person simply lock the car, since you have the other fob to open it with? Can you not retrieve the key fob from the drop off person later? Or have them deliver it to you somehow? Maybe give the drop off person a prepaid padded envelope to mail it to you? --Bob

You could use a RF blocker, but I think leaving the key fob w/friend is the best option. Just pick it up later, or have him/her mail it to you.

If that's not an option, you can try something like this.

Edit: I just thought of something else. Pull the battery out of the FOB, then throw it in trunk and lock it all up.

Unfortunately, he will hop on a flight earlier that day to go overseas. So he cannot return the key to me.

You can not lock the FOB in the car or the trunk, doors will unlock or trunk will pop open. As noted, all trunks have a power latch.

If you are hell bent on having the key "in" the car. You could put it under the hood somewhere. Not a "key locked in car" zone and certainly no power latch to trigger.

Thanks, I thought about pulling the battery off as well but then I don't know if he will be able to manually lock the car. I need to do some testing I guess. The RF blocker is an interesting idea.

...open fuel filler flap & place fob inside then close fuel filler flap...then lock the car using comfort access (door handles)...

If the above works...the problem would be that if someone came up to your door handles...they probably could open the car using CA since the fob is in proximity to the CA aerials.

I use an RF blocker pouch and keep it in my center console, for when I want to leave a keyfob in the car. It is simple, cheap, and foolproof.

like this: https://www.amazon.com/Mission-Darkn...34461499&psc=1

Good luck,
Danny

I can lock my car in garage from the App with my key fob in the kitchen. So i'm pretty sure it would work.

I just tested it. While the key fob is inside the cabin, I cannot use the handles to lock the car. However, using the My BMW app I was able to successfully lock the car remotely while the key fob was still inside the cabin. Then I used the spare key fob to unlock the car.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

I do this all the time but for different reasons. I don't want to carry my key fob with me into the gym or other places and just use the app to lock the doors.
