You're looking for more so like the Iridium line. They're subscription based but you can "pay as you go." So let's say you have your illegal drug shipments coming in every other month from Malaysia, then just activate for the months that you need to you it, okay Doc? |

They're pretty handy actually. I carry one as I do a lot of solo motorcycle riding where cell phones don't work. Basically, you can be tracked via a website (i.e. Wife can follow my progress). You can also send either preprogrammed messages ("I'm injured, send help", "All is well, just taking a break"), or you can sync your phone to it and send text messages that way-- for $1 a text. You can use your iPhone as the interface for it and that works pretty well with the app-- the tiny screen on the InReach is pretty useless unless its an emergency. There's also an "SOS" button that will notify back country rescue with your gps position. There's an insurance plan that can connect to that as well iirc so you don't get stuck with a humungous bill for a helicopter or something like that. Important safety tip-- carry it on your person, NOT on your bike, ATV or motorcycle-- that way if you go one way, and your bike goes off a cliff, you can still call for help. I charge mine about every other day when I'm using it. It'll run for 3-4 days (depending on how much you set it to ping), but I figure not letting it get low on charge is cheap insurance. There are other trackers (some with moving maps), so research what you want and what you want to carry. Personally, I don't find the maps all that useful as the phone app does essentially the same thing (and I also have a Garmin interfaced on my GS). R.

I had them when I was boating a lot, came in handing when the first mate (my wife) was on the bow and I was at the helm. or when I want to chat with another boater but not on the VHF.

Get your amateur (ham) radio license. It's only $15 for the test and 35 multiple-guess questions to get the Technician license, which will allow you to use all of the VHF/UHF ham repeaters in your region from a handheld.....

You can do just about everything but call with a satellite communicator. There is an activation fee and you have to pay for usage (monthly or annually) as they almost all use the Iridium satellite network. Mine can connect through blutooth to my phone and I can type texts that way or use a preprogrammed text if needed. It also is able to send out GPS coordinates and a message to people at an interval if I want.

3-5 miles average, plus the atmospheric skip and AM noise that makes that band unusable at times.
If the SHTF and the cellular network goes offline in a region, any unlicensed frequencies like CB and FRS are going to turn into unusable sh*t shows with millions of people congregating on the two dozen or so available frequencies. Ditto for licensed GMRS, MURS, etc. Ham radio operators live for the day that the cellular system collapses, and most counties have active ARES or RACES groups with hams providing and drilling for emergency communications to coordinate disaster recovery. Plus, the National Weather Service uses hams for storm-spotting via SKYWARN. If you want to communicate during a disaster, get your ham license...and drag your friends/family along to get theirs at the same time.....

I brought my new Husqvana chainsaw up north to the cabin this last vacation. But I messed up putting the bar & chain on, not cocking the chain lock properly before taking the cover off. So I had to take it to the local Husqvarna dealer, two towns over.
I pulled up to the little hardware store in my red BMW, with Onslow hanging out the window, wearing a tye-dye shirt, and entered the store wearing a face mask. Turns out this hardware store had nothing much besides a bunch of saws, and lots of right wing pics and sayings of the type I can't quote here. And two guys who looked like badly groomed ZZ-Toppers behind a counter. I explained my problem, and one says, "Well you bought this on the internet, didn't you?" I defensively said, "No! I bought it from a nursery in Brooklyn...." "Brooklyn! I didn't know they had trees in Brooklyn!" The other guy, "Yea, I hear they have one." "If you bought it here we would have put it together for you & showed you how to work it." I countered, "I had to transport it in my car so told them to give me just the box....." They charged me $15.; I gave them $20. because they humored me. |

Thank you. It's my midlife crisis blue. Every car I have had since 1992 has been black or some shade of grey. I ordered Long Beach Blue last time and chickened out before production started.
