M550i/540i MPE diffuser

Hi all,

I am looking for a diffuser that fits the M550i or MPE for the 540i. I have looked high and low on eBay and all of the diffusers that said they would fit the M550i/540i MPE, do not fit!

Trying to find one that looks like the M5 diffuser (something like this).

Any one have any ideas? Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Why wouldn’t the one in the link work?

Because 99.9% of all eBay trash is ill fitting junk that is not worthy of being installed on the Ultimate Driving Machine.

They don't fit because they are made for the 540i and not the M550i or 540i with MPE. The opening for the tips are too small for the larger exhaust outlets.

I'm still looking and to be honest and about to just cave and purchase the stock M550i diffuser, so that I can at least have my car looking proper again and look for something else down the road (if and when I can find something suitable).

I’m confused. What is the difference between what came on the 540 M-Sport and an M550? They look the same to me.

I have heard this numerous times - exhaust outlets don't line up correctly it seems on any of these ebay ones for a 550. FWIW, I put the M5 diffuser on my 540 and took it right off - looked way too bulky and odd to me.

Why not just get one from a local BMW dealer? When I added an MPE to my 2019 540xi, I was quoted $87 wholesale for one, although as I look at my invoice now they somehow charged me $158 for it. Wasn't paying close attention as the overall installed cost was close to their quote. Anyway the $158 shows as dealer net, which is with the discount. Part number is 51-12-8-067-763 for the 2019 part that BMW call a Bumper Cover, Rear. There also appears to be another number related to it: 511280. I am sure there would be dealers willing to sell you one at dealer net. --Bob

The MPE is significantly larger. I put some comparison info into this post a while back.

Since I went with the Remus exhaust, I think the M5 diffuser would fit perfectly with it. The stock diffuser is too plain IMHO with the quad outlets. I do agree with the quadrilateral tips, the M5 diffuser does look a little silly.

Thanks. Yeah, that's my fallback diffuser. The reason I'm not buying it now is because I'm looking for the M5 style diffuser to go with my quad outlet Remus exhaust.

I guess I need to figure out what an MPE is then. I'm guessing it means M Performance Exhaust. You are saying the M550 OEM diffuser is different than the 540? I'm still confused. Your link shows the size of the exhaust tip, but not the diffuser.

Yes, MPE is M Performance Exhaust for the 540i.
There's two diffusors available (matt black or the carbon version) and the fit is in combination with the rear apron trim piece.

There's differences with 550 or 540 in terms of the trim, but by looks the diffusors are the same parts.

Check here (540)
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=03_0717

and here for 550
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=03_0717

The trim piece is what gives the cutout for the tips.

eBay items won't fit larger 550 stock exhaust tips. I tried 2 and neither fit. Alibaba items won't either.

Thank. I know I’m not the sharpest tool, so I have to ask a lot of questions.
