Title after payoff

Anyone know how long it takes to receive the title once you mail in your check for the payoff? Im selling my car to a third party so I need to do the payoff myself.

That would almost certain depend on the company you're paying off. I'd expect it to be pretty quick one the check clears though. You might want to look at wiring the money if you want to expedite the process.

Probably depends on state. In PA it can take a few weeks as lenders legally aren’t allowed to have paper titles. They have to be stored electronically with the state. One paid off the state gets notified then they print and mail the title.

Depends on the lender. I've found the big box lenders take the longest but the local co-op is almost instant turnaround.

If your state is involved in anyway, all bets are off when it comes to public employees and agencies where there is no such thing as customer service.

I sold a Mazda 4 years ago to private party. Had the car financed through a local credit union. Was super easy. They transferred the title over to him inside the bank and wrote me a check for my profits.

Same here Mark. I sold an E38 many years ago. The buyer had a bank check, we went down to Rockland Trust (different name I think back then), went to the teller window, handed her the check and they handed us the title and the net proceeds after payoff to me. There is something to say for Credit Unions and local banks.

Depends on state, in California BMWFS had the title on hand, so my process was very fast.

I sent payoff cashiers check overnight on Thursday, Monday received an email that they received the pay off. I had paid for the overnight shipping, so they shipped it Wed via FedEx overnight and I received the title on Thursday.

Make sure your third party dealer will accept the title with the lessor on it, otherwise you will need to register it which also takes more time.

Yes, this is important. I got caught out by this and had to hunt for a DMV appointment in Vegas. Took 2 weeks to get lucky and land one. I didn't have to register it though. I was able to just get a new title.

Just to follow up on this and let people know I got the title from BMWFS in one week with the rush delivery option. As long as you mail in a certified check and pay the $15 rush delivery fee, it takes about a week

Do you mind sharing the exact timeline you sent in the check till you got the title? I'm in a similar position and I'm calculating the days I can get the title. TIA!

I overnighted my paperwork and certified check out last Thursday. They were closed last Friday. I got my title on Friday. So about a week.
