530E set charging question
So recently, I found on the MYBMW app that you can set a planned charging time frame. I have set it from
11:00pm to 6:00am. Plugged in the cable but the light automatically went to "blue" which I assume is starting to charge. Am I wrong to say it's charging when I plugged it in or is it not actually drawing a charge until the set start time of 11:00pm?

The note in the app says "the vehicle can be charged OUTSIDE the time slot… " which reads a little confusing. I'd also swap the times and see what happens.

I only used it a couple of times when at my in-laws. I found it less intuitive than I expected. It will charge inside the charging window if the car thinks you’ll have a full charge by your scheduled departure time. If it thinks it needs more it will charge earlier or longer than the window prescribes.
If you need it to absolutely charge only within the slot you’ll need to use a smart EVSE. |

I use the app for setting nav, checking if the windows are open, etc. but I have not used it for scheduled charging. My electric provider has a bad period of 3 PM to 8 PM so I don't plug in the car until after 8 PM (I do have a garage). If, on occasion, I forget, I simply plug it in in the morning when I go out for my newspaper on the driveway (I do have a charger so from zero to full charge is just under two hours).

I have a preset time for my charging between 10pm an 8am. When I get home around 5 and plug it in, it looks like it's charging, but I think it just making sure it can. After a few minutes it goes into a pause until 10 pm.
I get a nonfiction for each step from the app. |

I don't have an EV and am unfamiliar with how they work in terms of charging, but what is the advantage of scheduling charging times vs. just plugging it in when you get in the garage? I assume electricity may be cheaper after hours or something?
Just curious. Building up my knowledge base for when EV's are my last resort.

I'm sure I read somewhere very recently (I thought on here!) that when plugged in and set to charge to a specific time, it will charge straight away to circa 12% and then go to sleep until specified time for charging.
Apparently getting to the 12% mark does not take long - 15 mins? I need to find where I read that bit of data, and if it is factually correct. |

Electricity is .08 cents a kWh where I live, but I know this can vary widely. 8kWh x $.08 x 30 days = $19.20 a month |
