I sold my 2021 BMW 530xi, which was my 3rd 5 Series in a row (still own a 18 diesel X5 and owned 3 series too) for a 2021 refresh Model S LR with 19’s. Always was curious about Tesla and love the exterior of the refreshed Model S. I was also intrigued by the updates/tech that Tesla always does. I am very loyal to BMW and still love their cars.
After about 3 weeks of Tesla ownership, I am wavering on whether to keep it. I miss having HUD, CarPlay, BMW interface (so used to it could do it blindfolded), 5 Series handles/suspension much better/smoother and multicontour seats. On the Model S, love charging at home, the very good range, cheap to run when charging at home, regen braking, how the car unlocks/locks and also you just get out of it, ie never turning it off, two wireless chargers in front and back that are big enough for any phones and perfectly placed, frunk/rear storage space, rear seats, homelink automatically closes and opens garage, etc… I got it at the pre refresh price at $77k and would never pay $95k for it. At that price figured it would be a good test and I know I can sell it easily if needed and get back to leasing a 5 Series. |

I just picked up a very loaded , low mileage 2018 530e. My side chick is an e92 m3 with a v8 paired to the inconel MPE (exhaust).
As far as I'm concerned this g30 is way better than a Tesla for a few reasons. 1 - the luxury is amazing when you option out the comfort seats. Having a massage while the car drives itself on highway and in traffic is a game changer 2 - the hUd is amazing and the CarPlay and other tech work seamlessly. Even id6 is great by itself with Alexa built in and Siri 3 - most of my driving is free because the 20km or so (more in summer) of electric range is all I need most days. Every store I go to has a charger, and many are free 4 - the car looks better inside and out than a Tesla and it feels better built I use the m3 when I want to hear an exhaust and have fun, and I use the 530e 95% of the time when I want to feel pampered and isolated from the world, and not burn gas. With charging everywhere and using the engine a lot also, my fuel consumption is 5.1L/100km where the m3 is 17-20L/100km I think the g30 is a great platform but i don't think you should choose between those two cars, you should have two cars with different purposes instead. |

I agree, paying for gas on a v8 sucks... But for now I thing the m550i is worth it. Probably the nicest car I've had thus far.

This car is just effortless to drive. Well, there is a lot of effort to keep it below "go directly to jail" speeds. Glad the OP was able to "discard" the Model S for a tidy profit. I get the appeal of Teslas, but I think their fans are more blinded by brand loyalty than Apple (or BMW) fans. Kind of feels cult like.

19.2 here in the Boston area, but I really only drive it on the weekends weather permitting. So clear highway roads or to a restaurant. I'm fine with 19.2. Better than my E39.

They're used to Apple and other hi-tech electronics type customer service. Tesla seems normal to them.

I am a BMW guy - mostly 5 Series and still own a X5d and own a new Model S Tesla and I love cars. I just don’t get how anyone can’t at least be intrigued by Tesla and I am a BMW loyalist. Love how with Tesla, I get new features/software updated for free and not stuck with legacy software (have already have 3 updates since owning the car for a month that added features). Tesla is changing the industry. Legacy carmakers are quickly trying to play catch up, which will be awesome for the market place, as create more innovation. Tesla is so far ahead in the EV race though and charging infrastructure. Guessing the same people that hate on Tesla and make the above quote don’t like technology or change either. |

Just a bit of a cheeky joke m8 but this does illustrate my point that the Tesla is first and foremost a technology product, and that is what excites its buyers. Fwiw, I can't say I've ever felt any anxiety about the software being out of date in my 2012 Aston Martin as I'm sending it down some glorious rural highway in southern Utah, and I just can not imagine ever wanting it to drive itself. I don't hate technology, I'm not even some boomer who goes around moaning about automatics. I am, however, a serious car collector and driver who understands beauty and aesthetics, values design heritage, and appreciates a car maker who is trying to deliver above all an emotional driving experience. That simply is not happening in the stark, soulless, plasticky cabin of the glorified iPad. Its decade-old design at this point isn't even "futuristic" anymore, which has been for all this time its sole rebuttal. All these apps and infinitely updating convenience features but it will never have 4th gear, which is where one encounters joy. Anyway, if I'm going to be forced into an EV world, which I do regrettably expect will happen, it'll be the Porsche for me. Unless Jaguar decides to make that electric E-Type they were planning, then I'll have that |

Ironically it’s Tesla falling flat on tech in several areas that turned me off of them (among other things). No HUD, no 360 camera, no Waze through Apple CarPlay, no kick activated trunk (i can no longer live without this). I was considering an S from the 17-18 era which the current ones seem to have moved far past, but for that one, the touch screen was relatively unresponsive. The autonomous features were okay but not noticeably better than lane keep and acc. I can also trust my car’s self parking even though it’s conservative- at least at the time that didn’t seem to be the case with Tesla. The OTA updates also appear to be a double edged sword, though at this point the rest of the industry is also moving to them, for better or for worse.
