2017 540i - Low Coolant

I apparently need to top off my coolant. Do these require a special type of coolant, or just regular?

Bmw usually provides free top off (if under warranty).

BMW uses the Blue coolant (purchased from BMW), but if yours has been serviced by someone else, it is possible it could have been changed.

Try to find out what yours has. Otherwise, add 250ml of DISTILLED water to hold you over until you can get to a shop. That increases the ratio to 52% or so, but really find out if you have yellow or blue.

Thanks. No longer under warranty. Will pop the cap and check the color.

If it has been changed to the green stuff then you should probably flush the whole system. BMW coolant will look like weak windex.

G48 is trade name for the equivalent product (blue) BMW uses.
If you cannot get to the dealer, most any auto parts store will carry a G48 product.

Yellow was used later...I believe during 2019 production. Late 2018 may be the transition period...but I am uncertain.

From what I understand, BMW Green is the current coolant BMW uses on our cars, mix 50/50, I use distilled water:

Walmart and amazon sells the peak brand that is formulated for European cars...Slightly cheaper than what bmw sells for $30....

Ultimately if it is low there could be a leak....Just had my reservoir bottle replaced. Cost me near $700..
