In the meanwhile I've resorted to this but it's not too terrible in terms of cable management and and looks. Functionally wise it only covers the Mode and Band buttons which for me are useless and about 1/3 of the vent but haven't noticed any issues heating up phone or passengers in 20° temps. Ignition Button just perfectly visible and accessible also.
BMW does a lot of things right and then they do a lot of little things wrong. These little things are usually options or features they are catching up on and the design or engineering sucks. A good example would be their first attempt at cupholders in E series cars. The charging mat blows in the G30. I guess I could get past that is charges sloooowwww, but it burns up and goes into overheat mode in minutes. Poor ventilation is my guess.

Yeah, you definitely can do a better job there with a better solution than that. I am not going to tell you what to do though, I have done plenty of that in this thread.

String removing the centre console is very simple, this removes the entire plastic insert you could then mount the mat under and it will charge through the plastic if it's thin enough when reassembled.

Super clean install and plenty of wires you can tap into inside that area for cigarette charger and rear USB lines.

I have contemplated doing this many times as the oem mat is crap more of a phone cooker than charger.

Video below of how to remove the cubby.

I did similar before on my E92.

That is a lot easier than I would have thought. There are a zillion charging options if you wanted to go inside the center console and not to be confused, the box with the double doors. If you are a serial charger per se, the thought of opening and closing those doors to charge your phone every time you get in and out of the car is not appealing to me. Plus I like to grab my phone while stopped at a light or in traffic to check an email or send text, yes I know I can use Siri for texts and I do, but you get the point. Easy access to the actual phone. This is the main reason the center console compartment is not appealing.

That cable needs to be run into the vent and hidden. Did it on the old 435.

Where did you run the power? I'm trying to avoid having any extra wires looking untidy around the cabin.
I removed the cap on the end of the dash and then popped out the vent and ran the wire under the vent to a usb charger behind the dash. The charger is in an add-on 12v socket, which I hard wired to a fuse tap under the glove box. Fuse tap and add-on socket were cheap on Amazon.
