ROFL no it does not. It means as much of the car will be electric as possible to cut down on emissions. Even on entry level cars in the range.

The new BMW 5er will be the first BMW and as BMW are hoping in that segment to offer a fuel cell model. As BMW steps up the innovation game in the race for sustainability leadership and looming 2020 targets.

The fuel cell model will head a range of innovative mobility models from EfficientDynamics lines with three and four cylinder , eDrive and the flagship fuel cell model developed with Toyota.

The Fuel Cell model will be available in the 5er Sedan and all new BMW 5er Gran Turismo.

Read a few comment here and let me say this.

If BMW isn't letting the f10 stay out for 7 years there's a reason, they can't. Hey, it's a bad ass car, I freakin love it. But they need a new M5 to compete with others. The f10 is a great car but trust me, knowing BMW, I know what they are capable of. They've done some changes recently and moved marketing and design people around, ect. Trust me when I say this, the f10 M5 and non m5 are great cars, especially for its weight. I've seen m5's hit 0-62 in 3.7 seconds, look how damn heavy the car is.

I predict BMW will offer AWD, make the 5 lighter, more powerful, bad azz styling, much much more tech, ect. BMW is going to crush the competition. When I transfer to med school I am buying the next gen M5. 100%. Mark my words!!

Fuel cell? Dead end. Can we see a 600+ km electric range version instead please. Electric only, no hybrid. And in touring as well, not sedan or GT only.
Otherwise, I think my current F11 is the last BMW for me for a while.

It's funny, but the car manufacturers are doing what Porsche has known for decades, it is better to lighten the car than to keep adding HP. The benefit is better handling and fuel economy.

First, before you can lighten it, you have to make the car heavier.

BMW needs to make an electric car that has the range of the Tesla.

Tesla just made their guarded pattens available to anybody so there is no excuses not to accomplish this in short order. Otherwise BMW will be a follower to all who follow Tesla's clearly spelled out lead.

I think BMW has a different vision than Tesla.
They have their small city I3 out, and I guess that is the segment they are going to focus on.
Most people are not ready for a fully electric as their primary vehicle, but a small secondary vehicle is acceptable. This is where the I3 and other small electric cars like Nissan leaf, VW e-up etc will do well.

BMW are going for Hybrids to target those who are not ready for a fully electric car, and those who cover large distances. Even with a long electric range, you still need to have a long stop to recharge, while filling up your tank takes less than 5 minutes and you are back on the road.
I doubt we will see a fully electric large size BMW before 2020.

For my personal use an I3 would be just what I need to do my daily things, I don't need a Tesla at more than twice the price.

As for the Tesla, apart from a decent power output, and a nice external design, I found the rest of the car a huge disappointment, and would never even consider one for those reasons alone. Though Tesla may improve on things in the future as their revenue increases so that it will appeal to me.

That is the latest rumor...sometime in early 2017 as a 2018 MY. M5 should be out sometime in 2018.

I have an i3 and an F10 for exactly those reasons. I own the i3 and lease the F10 because I'll be getting the G30 when the lease runs out. I'll consider the Plug-in version, but need to run a cost benefit analysis. I'll lease if it looks like there will be a true 4-door i5 that uses the carbon fiber core of the i3/8 with a plug-in drivetrain. THAT I'll buy.

You mean the principal that its always been the heaviest and most gadget laden 5 series?

Apart from the lightweight specials (e46 CSL and F80 GTS) every M car has always been the heaviest petrol RWD car in the range be that 3/4/5 or 6.

They have never been lightweight and that includes the e30 M3 which was heavier than the e30 325i.
