So, I have this co-worker... we all know "that guy". I mentioned this cable free charger that BMW is developing. He responded with, "Yeah, but you're basically microwaving yourself using that!"

Nice technology, but still the same issue as regular chargers - no infrastructure.
I need one of those in my office, one in each hotel and one at each gas station please. Also judging by how hot the iphone wireless charger gets in new BMW x5, that it shuts off the phone , overheats it - so its hot to touch... I'm not sure i want to do it in my house. Maybe 300 meters away in case of fire |

I agree - this is cool!
The house architecture sucks, but the wireless charging is a must have if I ever switch to hybrid / EV.

if they're going to wireless charging it needs to have bigger coverage though, what's the tolerance for how close you need to park on top it?

Keep in mind this is just a pilot program. Need to tackle this before scalable expansion though (public infrastructure targeted).
I attended a seminar and spoke with engineers (internally) from a car company. The issues with wireless charging testing was not only heating up elements inside the cabin (metal knobs, info control, etc.), but also heating up the cell phones and jewelry of anyone inside the vehicle. I wouldn't expect this to officially hit market *too* soon. I'd guess 2021 roughly... |

I also believe that it will not charge as fast as a plug-in. I don't see it making sense for those of us with a charging station already. I think I am still fully capable of plugging in the cable.

I have a Tesla Model 3 that I plug in every night. It's honestly such a non event to do so, I can't imagine spending my own money on an inductive charging pad. I wonder what the efficiency and speed are compared to a direct connection.

But I believe you must have a fairly „flat" dog or cat to be able to do that. A hamster - more likely.
