Phone issues

Over the last few days my phone will not always link up with the cars Bluetooth if I’m on the phone and get in and start the car. It’s not obvious to me how to manually link the phone to the car while talking. I end up using the phones speaker and it’s annoying. A shut down of the motor and a Lock and unlock of the doors fixes it after a Re start.

Anyone else ?

Are you using CarPlay? If not, you can force a connection attempt in the iDrive menu. Also, do you have multiple phones or tablets paired to the vehicles Bluetooth? Sometimes my iPad will connect before my iPhone if I leave my phone in the house when I start my vehicle with my iPad already in it.

CarPlay doesn’t have a “transfer to car” option that I have found. Which is silly if you ask me. You can hit the same button you normally hit to activate speakerphone on the iPhone and select CarPlay to transfer it over.

It works when I do it. Of course you lose who you're talking to for about 10 seconds while Bluetooth connects. Not uncommon.

And I only use CarPlay.

Yeah it works the majority of the time, but I had it not switchover a few random times. Which lead me to noticing there isn't a way to do it via CarPlay. Which Apple should fix IMHO.

If you're not using CarPlay and are using iDrive then there is the option to transfer the call from the car to the phone or back again. But BMW can't control Apple CarPlay UI so they can't add this back.

It is one of the reasons I am not sure I like CarPlay. It is nice for Waze alerts, but I'm otherwise liking iDrive more TBH.

Occasionally my iPhone doesn't connect to CarPlay which can be rather irritating when you're already driving. I found the fix for this is to turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off your phone, wait for a few minutes, then turn them back on. This has only happened a handful of times.

I just had a very similar issue come up with my 540i and I went to the dealer. They performed a software update and so far so good!

On a slightly related subject, I can't get my contacts to appear on the BMW screen from my old iPhone 6. As I recall, for contacts to appear requires a fairly high IOS. Mine was recently updated to 12.4.5. Should that work or do I need a nigher IOS? Thanks, Bob

According to this site, it should be compatible and contacts on the phone available but not those on the SIM. The site defaults to a 2020 model so I suggest you insert your VIN in just in case.
