How does the N63TU3 compare to the B58TU?

Wondering where the N63TU3 stands comparing to its little brother

The B58, in O1 form, just made Ward’s Ten Best Engines list.

The gutter. BMW can't build a durable V8 to save its life.

I know it's a numbers game but I rarely see M5/X5M/X6M with any engine problems but see a ton of 5er and 7ers that use the V8 with issues.

Ya. The N6x has been a PITA. Not to mention the S65.

Whats wrong with S65 besides rod bearings and throttle actuators? Isn't this kind of stuff par for the course for BMW over the last 17 years?

It's probably because the S engines are different. So the standard V8 might have more issues but I mean... BMW's past V8 all had some type of problem here or there.

BMW are masters of I6 engines but they really don't build a great a V8. That is more of AMG's forte.

No its not that AMG builds bettet V8's its because they don't push their engines to the max in terms of output and revs per displacement. AMG just builds bigger motors with lower revs and leaves room on the table.

They did build really bulletproof V8's till about 2003.
M62TU's and S62's were the best/strongest of them all.
Then it went downhill.
My 02 540i had 206k right before i sold it last year.
Other than oil leaks due to bad gaskets everywhere that werent changed over the years... I did the valley pan, the chain guides, and vanos... and it drove like a dream. I want it back actually.

S65 is a very reliable motor aside from throttle actuators. I wouldn't even consider the rod bearings a reliability issue since such a small percentage have actually failed. More like a design flaw that can be remedied preventatively. Plenty running strong with 200k+ miles.

Weren't the E39 and E38 V8's (I believe the M62) in the 40i notorious for Vanos rebuilds/issues which were incredibly expensive? My dad had a 99 540 6MT and loved it, but it was very problematic (although not all of it was the motor).

Personally, like others have said, BMW just builds their inline 6's much better than their V8's, they seem to be more durable.
