optimal wheel width...
Hello all,
I am taking a delivery of my m550 in about a week. The car was ordered with 688m 20" wheels that are 8"/9" front/rear in width. Tires are 245/275. I was planning to order 669m wheels as a second set for autocross. These 669m wheels are also 8"/9" front/rear in width. Everywhere I looked, the ideal wheel width for 245/275 tires is 9/10" or for 245/285 tires - 9/10.5". Is there a reason why BMW ships cars with these narrow wheel (besides giving extra protection for the wheels)? Having sub-optimal wheel width would affect the handling, not just during daily driving but during autocross as there will be more sidewall movement compared when the tires are stretched more. Please let me know your thoughts... I may be completely wrong with my understanding. Thank you. |

245/35-20 has 8.5" as recommended wheel width, 275/30-20 has 9.5" as recommended wheel width.
BMW ships 1/2" narrower wheels from factory. Not a big issue, I think it's just beneficial since it minimize tire stretch and offer better protection for the wheels. |

A slightly narrower wheel means less weight. Better fuel efficiency & it will make the car feel more nimble & lighter when it comes to handling, braking & acceleration. Less weight is always better.
Stance wise doesn't look as good but your correct it will definitely protect your wheels. It will also ride more comfortable over bumps with wider tires vs stretched tires.

Slightly delayed answer but BMW always does this on non M cars.
You could buy G11/12 7 series wheels as they are 20x8.5 and 20x10 with a slightly lower offset. A number of people here have done it and I think they look quite good. |

245/45-18 on R:9x18" ET44 ?
Quote:
Best regards to everyone I have a question about the tires on my G30 (JC31) "520d mpaket". The vehicle I have has OEM wheels: "wheel double spoke 662M - 18" 245 / 45ZR18 100Y 8Jx18 ET30 275 / 40ZR18 99Y 9Jx18 ET44 My question is, can I put winter tires on the rear wheels of the same dimensions as the 245/45 R18 100V XL as well as on the front? Has anyone put the 245/45 ZR18 summer tires in practice on * OEM 9Jx18 ET44 wheel? * Are there any problems with this option? Thank you very much for your answers! greetings from Croatia |

That will work!
The rear tires will look more stretched on the wheels. The offset is also 14mm less aggressive for the rear wheels, if you want to fix that 15mm spacers will help. Not needed though. |

I guess I always looked at this as being nearly the same as the front since the rear wheels are 1" or 25.4mm wider. So a 12.7mm offset would make them the same effective offset from the hub as the front, and this is 14mm. Just curious.

But the tire width differs 30mm, slightly more than 1". I think BMW have taken that into account. Therefore 14mm difference instead of 13mm (12.7). |
