I'm not holding out hope for this... I'll be very pleasantly surprised if it does happen, but i doubt bmw will offer this for idrive 6...

Yeah, I was thinking the same. HUD is almost useless without turn by turn instructions in it.

I'm running iOS 16 beta. They haven't added it yet.

My guess is the car operating system (idrive) would need to be updated to allow that 'hook' from the CarPlay input/port into the HUD components...

I go with BMW's own navigation for the HUD projection, but i have had a couple of times where new sub-divisions haven't been added to it leading to wrong address routing

I bet even apple won't offer it in all their iOS 16s! You have to have certain models.
I hope it becomes available in ID6! I looked enough and I'm convinced upgrading ain't option for me!
Just with all the options missing and prices doesn't worth it for me!

BMW added “turn by turn” cards into the HUD and cluster for iDrive 7 a couple of years ago. Last I heard on the forums is that the map itself will be integrated into iDrive 8 cars.

Correct, but was hopeful this iOS 16 enhancement would make it functional in Pre-LCI cars which are ID6.

Sadly, I don’t believe it will. I know with the iDrive 7 update it had to be accompanied by "second screen" support in CarPlay to show content there. I am not even sure if that second screen support is dynamic enough that iDrive 7 will see any change.

Apple appears to be adding a lot more power to CarPlay with iOS 16, but the bulk requires a much deeper CarPlay integration than BMW is willing to accept. Basically they want to replace every display in the car with CarPlay similar to your screenshot.

This CarPlay 2 is ONLY for new vehicles. It's a whole new system tightly intergrated with the vehicle from an early stage in development .

IF ( and they haven't announced ) bmw will support it , it won't be until idrive 9 / neu klass cars.

I highly doubt BMW will embrace this until forced.

It is a wholesale replacement for iDrive.

Even though iDrive 7 supports CarPlay second screen it doesn’t support this. So there are some tiers to all of this.

A shame as the map from CarPlay in the hud and cluster like BMW Maps would be perfect.

IIRC, BMW wasn't on the list of car manufacturers shown when this feature was shown at WWDC last month.

I had to look up the second screen thing - quite nice. I haven't seen it anywhere though...
It seems like that would replace all the car manufacturers' attempts at the screen

Oh, one thing I wanted to mention - I noticed, even in idrive 6, when you search for something on Apple Maps in CarPlay, you can click the Share button and send it to BMW Navigation - and then you get turn by turn on the HUD using BMW's mapping.
A couple of times, I couldn't 'share' it - not sure if that was due to an address not being there or not in contacts.

Woah, I am going to have to look for this. So you have to share it from the Map carplay interface and not the phone? I generally start my route guidance with Maps from the phone.

Yes, you're correct. You tap that 'share' button (the open ended box with the arrow pointing outward) and in CarPlay, you get that option to send to BMW Navigation.

I think you can start your route from the phone (and that'll show up in CarPlay in the car) and then click on 'share'

Got a chance to check it out. Hitting the share button basically starts the cars Navigation which I know displays in HUD. I was kind of hoping it still would run Apple Maps in the main screen and also display turn by turn even if from the cars Navigation in HUD. I am a big Apple Carplay and Maps user and was wishfully thinking the HUD turn by turn would sync with Apple Maps on the main screen, but this sharing just launches the cars navigation system.

I did learn a new thing though! I appreciate your help, thank you. This probably will not be resolved until I get my next BMW with ID7 or ID 8.

Same here - I'd love to have Apple Maps in the HUD - but this is like a compromise for now.
I think we're out of luck with ID6 as goes more Apple integration in ID6 since even CarPlay seems to be an extra element added rather than the main card sections

ID7 is such a visual mess, maybe ID8 will suck less and not be a Tesla wannabe etc.

Ha, I also think ID7 is a mess! Especially the cluster, it's a mess of too much information. It may as well be a NYSE ticker tape displayed in Time Square.
