First oil change
Need your advice. When I got my F10 4 years ago the dealer recommended oil change within 2000km. He said it was not a must but it was recommended.
Now for g30 dealer has changed and saying it's not recommended or required. Oil change is not a big cost but is it needed, beneficial or maybe even harmful? |

Hello,
I have read many articles and asked many servicemans. All said to change oil after 2000-5000km because of the remaining pieces from new engine. Only the dealer said its not needed (ofc he probably wants my visits in service) And here are all advices which I got from most of them and which I will do after I get my new G30 : 0-500 as far as possible from red 0-3000Km not go over 5000k rpm not highway drive only (the new engine needs change in driving style - if u drive only highway with no speed change it may cause the oil lose they said..) if you try some "red" rpm u can dmg engine(rare) but if u do it u should change oil after this "fun" sooner than 2000km some of them said some of them not its better to take the 98 octane petrol not standard 95 (idk the measuring in USA or so but here in central EU is normal called Natural 95 and better ones like Natural 98, Benzina Verva, Shell V power. Only some of them really are more than 95. They still has 95 but only some aditive in it - like the shell). Nobody said u CANT take standard 95 but u lose a bit from performance (20-30HP), the car gonna drink more and the life of the engine could be a bit lesser. btw If you read the BMW website you can see that all cars are tested with 98 octane.. Manual says 1,200 miles running in period, and don't go over 3,500rpm (and I know BMW limit the car in this period to prevent damage, same happened in my F10)... I can tell it does not let me go above 4,000rpm even if I try really hard But I don't need to go crazy and can be patient

I'm pretty sure BMW don't limit the car rev wise for the first 1200 miles.
Many threads on oil changes here over the years....... |

In my F10 before the stated 1,000 mile run in, it never really felt as though it was giving full acceleration and power (even after resetting kick down etc.)... then suddenly it was a different car... The same feel with my G30, it's nice but I can tell it is reined in... I'll confirm this in ±500 miles

full engine break in is 5000KM. I believe this is when you should change your oil because if you change it sooner then this, some metal particles from the engine will still get trapped in the oil filter.

Change oil when Svc Monitor says to
I have always followed the service monitors instructions and have NEVER had an engine issue, 1 car had 220.000 miles on it before I gave it away and I have an 07 with 170,000 and neither one ever used oil!
Did notice with wife's diesel it only went 8500 miles before 1st oil change, whereas the gasoline models went almost twice as far before service. |

I'm sure this will spark controversy but my first CA back in 2011 told me the break in period was a bunch of crap... these cars are engineered to drive.
I didn't have the stones to take his word for it though |

Production technology improved a lot last decades, tolerances and standards are much tighter etc. So no more metal pieces and similar stuff in a new engine.
Basically, an engine is ready to be used normally the moment it exits the factory. Most of the recommendations for break in are tens of years old, it's just difficult to get rid of them. |

Not required to do an early change on these engines at all.
There has been tons of oil analysis over more than a decade of BMW's for this and they always come back showing the oil is clean and healthy at 2,000km or 5,000km. You can search the other forums here for analysis guys have done

I think it's better to change oil during first thousands of ride. But official they recommend you to change it after XY kms. I dont say it's no truth what u said. I think there is some fact on it.. ..if they tested remains in oil it's one thing but the other one is there could be pieces in other parts of car which can damage it in time. Not just the oil.. It's easiest thing to make "sure" it will be ok for a few EUR than save that amount and could have problems in future.. my opinion.. |

I changed my oil at around 1400km mark. Cant remember the exact mileage but its around there. After which I slowly progressed higher up the rev range. Im now at 3400km and have since redlined the car a few times. No issues at all for now.

Had TWO
M5’s before the M550 and followed the break in sticker on the windshield. Dealer said this car didn’t need it. Have red lined it repeatedly and hit 140mph. It’s a lease this time and under warranty. Drive the crap out of it! That’s why you bought it I hope. |
