Not BMW directly, but these guys did a full tear down of a B58 from the new Supra. It's a great bit of insight as to how this engine is constructed.

For those that found the above of interest, .. Papadakis just managed to punch 1033 Horsepower out of their B58 build. Heavy mods, but engine still on a stock crank. Very very impressive!

Just shows how strong the bottom end of this motor is.

Huh? It’s the exact same engine as what has been in the 540 since 2017. Rated exactly the same...or should I say “under rated exactly the same!

Not correct. The Supra engine is based on the M1 (TU1) version of the B58. 2017-2019 G30 has the M0 version. There's quite a few changes in the M1. Some changes to improve fuel economy, some for cost reduction and some to improve reliability and simplify manufacturing. As with every revision to pretty much every product, some things get better, others worse.

Neverthess, yes it's still a B58 series engine.

Been watching these videos for some time with interest.

Watch the one where he dynos it and sparks start flying out of the top of the Valve cover

Luckily it was not too bad in the end, but it looked scary.

I appreciate the correction, but having trouble understanding. What cars have the M1 version? I get that the M340 & Z4 have more power than the 540 and likely has some changes. Are you saying that is the M1?

Thanks for your insight. I admit I assumed that because the Supra is rated exactly the same as the 540 that it is the same engine.

There's now an M1 and O1 in BMW branded product and I believe a C in Toyota. See here:

Supra has more torque no? So was the newer B58 with same hp (450NM vs 500NM) on say X5/540/740 etc.

Yea they used custom port fuel injection because of the higher fuel rates. The B58 has direct cylinder injectors from the factory. They just had them sitting in place though and one of them melted, so the sparks you see are bits of the combustion and the direct injector flying out the top. That's why they ended up plugging the direct injection system.

So what is the 'real' horsepower on the 2017-19 540i?

It thought it was 340hp or perhaps 335hp and 340ps , get muddled up with the units!! Something like that though. Sure someone can put me right on that here!

Yes, the official HP via the BMW website is 335 HP, but as we all know that BMW underrates their engines in terms of HP, I was wondering what other HP specs have been listed for this engine?

I remember a video on eBay where a 2017 540 went neck-to-neck with 400 hp E43 till 250 kmh. 540 for sure has more than 335bhp.
