Are you looking for a VIN decoder?

Usually all you need is the last seven digits.

Oh you mean the license plate... not sure where you live, but that is public information in the United States. You should be able to get that from your local DMV.

British car registration is different than USA car registration. So to the US forum members...be careful not to get confused by what the OP is asking.

They probably need the help of other UK/British forum members since there will be no sites familiar with US forum members on how to decode a UK car's registration with its VIN (unless you have dual citizenship or use to live over there).

Everywhere that I used to get a VIN from a reg has now stopped working, various parts websites used to show you the VIN when you enter the reg. Now, none of them do.

If its a BMW and your local dealer's parts guy is friendly, he'll give it to you, but most of them will not. I've had luck once or twice only like that.

He's trying to get the VIN based on the license plate The only way he can find that out is to go to the equivalent of his DMV.

That won't work here - the DVLA will not give out that information to a member of the public.

Just curious, OP, why do you want to know? If it's your car, you should have the VIN. If not, what not ask the owner? Or are you just trying to find a website??

Perhaps he's trying to decode the VIN to see what options it came with.
