Here is an article that states the stock F10 M5 CP puts 615hp to the wheels on a dyno. Considering BMW rates the new M550 over 120hp lower than the F10 M5 CP I guess it makes sense.

they're going to have to drop at least 1000 lbs in weight to be anywhere close to that territory.

you know it's true. Not sure why you M-Sport, M235 owners always deny it. It's not an M car.

Nobody said its an M car. And I'm still debating whether i want the m550i or the m5. But there have been "m" badges on non-m cars for at least a decade now, and true M cars are still a cut above, so dont worry, your precious self-perception of status based on your car is still intact. But its indisputable that the performance of this car warrants some differentiation from the more pedestrian versions, especially when buyers are cross shopping audi S cars and AMG sports. M performance cars are simply hot versions of the cars that still place a premium on comfort. It would be nice if that gave m cars the room to really focus on performance above all else (leaving m performance as the "balanced" solution for daily drivers, etc), but that remains to be seen. |

1) Impressive numbers it's clearly going to be very quick
2) M or not it's ALL marketing to get you to buy things (see all the threads on how BMW is the most valuable car brand); so that argument holds no water at all unless you do nothing but race your M / non-M car. In which case why would you buy 4 door car. Last time I checked the speed limit was 70. 3) I'm glad BMW are making cars like this, because it's clear they aren't ever going to return to making a supercar (or at least it's highly doubtful this side of the electric changeover) 4) Be grateful you can test drive it and buy it. One of the largest markets for BMW here in the U.K. and we cannot get either this or the M550d 5) Have a nice weekend |

It is an "M" car. Do you know how I know? BMW says so. This isn't an owner badging their non-M car. Did BMW have marketing ploys behind it? Sure. But that isn't the point - BMW makes the call - not BMW posters who think they know what "supercar" means and live in the past of "what an M car should be". I hate to break it to you - but E39 and E60 M type cars are gone. Forever. All the cars are heavy now - from ANY manufacturer. There haven't been true luxury/GT cars - that you should (not could) take on a track - for some time now. Last edited by vtknight; 07-24-2017 at 08:15 AM.. |

FWIW, I've owned an F10 M5 with 700whp, and I test drove an M550i last week at Rallye BMW, and I will say I was truly impressed.
Now I didn't flog the car on the back roads, just simply put it into Sport+ and played around. Even with a light drizzle this car was seamless. BMW has recently used their last generation M cars to benchmark their future non M cars. In other words this car is F10 M5 good in many ways. So they've blurred the lines of true M vs M sport. The differentiation is felt through the lack of firmness of a true blooded M car, or the directness of the braking. I can see that they've also left some room in there for the M5 to spread it's wings. I would imagine the M5 would let more of the noises penetrate the cabin, ie exhaust and other mechanical noises through their speakers of course. lol But boy is this car smooth and responsive for a heavy turbo car. If it weren't for the M5 stigma, this M550i would be plenty of car for me.
