The brake dust was so bad on my convertible, I got fed up and replaced with after market reduced dust pads. They worked great and I didn't feel like my wheels looked like poo 5 minutes into a drive after washing the car…

I'd like to use the oem ones on my new car until they need to be replaced.

I was planning on using wheel was to protect the rims, but was wondering what other people used and what kind of success they had?

Brake dust is only an issue if your car has MSport brakes (the type with painted calipers). If you have raw aluminum calipers, dust isn't much of an issue. Well, unless you rarely wash your car. In which case, wash your car.

Get some wheel Woolies brushes and that makes wheel cleaning way easier.

I know some have changed to ceramic pads known for low dust.

I ceramic coated my wheels. I took them off, cleaned them, removed old wheel weight adhesive, and then prepped them with isopropyl alcohol. Used Avalon King Armor Shield IX DIY ceramic coating (use a code from one of the YouTubers like WatchJRGo or LegitStreetCars for a discount -- no affiliation). I also cleaned up the Msport calipers and coated them as well.

If Akebono makes the Euro Ceramic pads for your specific setup, that's the easiest solution. They are great pads but unfortunately they don't make applications for either of my vehicles...

Same. I used CQuartz 3.0 on the calipers and Griots Garage 3 in 1 Ceramic Spray Wax on the wheel barrels and fronts.

For pads, Brembo is making a ceramic pad. I haven't tried them yet. But on the Akebono, I have had issues recently with three sets on my E39 of knocking noises on brake application. I ended up having to switch to ATE ceramic. A shame as I was a big fan of Akebono for many years. My BMW service facility says they have had some issues with Akebono Euro Ceramic as well with knocking noises, when braking, both in reverse and forward. Not sure what is up, but suspect the pad backing is undersized slightly causing movement in the caliper and carrier.

Did ceramic coating help with keeping your wheels and calipers clean?

The dust still collects. It's just easier to remove now. Mostly just use the hose to spray it off and a light wipe with the wheel cleaning mitt and bucket of soapy water.
