So back to the subject of harsh penalties for speeding. In Las Vegas, we've had our second tragedy in a few months.
First was Henry Ruggs III, ex-Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver, who decided it would be a good idea to go down a city street at 156mph in his C8 corvette. Hit a woman and her dog in a Rav 4. Rav 4 was crumpled, started on fire, and burned the dog and woman alive. Bystanders couldn't get the door open due to the significant damage as she was dying. Ruggs walked away, but faces significant jail time unless the lawyers he hired get him off somehow. Second was a few days ago when a jackass that had just gotten out of court a few days earlier for speeding, went through a red light at 100+ mph in his Dodge Challenger. He broadsided a Toyota Sienna minivan with 7 family members in it. All 7 died, including 4 children. Their mother wasn't with them so she's alive w/o her husband and kids because of this loser that decided he could do whatever he wanted to do in his car. The two occupants of the Challenger also died as well but fuck them. Saves the taxpayers from having to have a trial and incarcerate them. I've sped. I've done stupid shit on the highways. I've cursed the "draconian" laws in Virginia (1 day in jail for every mph over 90, reckless driving if going 15mph over the limit, etc.). However, now I think it's time for stupid people to be held to account. This has to stop.

Well In Europe from this summer, new cars will be equipped with speed limiters.
So using the technology that we already have in the cars , namely satnav database with info on speed limit for road and cameras for reading speed limit signs. The car will not be able to speed based upon that. Having said that, I believe you can turn this feature off after the car starts (like ASS) and can override it with full throttle I believe The technology is flawed as I think we all know it doesn't get it right all the time so it has to be able to be overridden. |

I don't drive a 5er but I've had them as loaners, definitely vault-like with little sensation of your speed. Great on the Autobahn, but otherwise you are always itching for more involvement. I think almost all modern cars suffer from this. They are either too refined and/or too powerful to enjoy on public roads.
My car feels a bit bored on straights so whenever there's a turn in the road I push it b/c that's when the enjoyment happens. However a month ago I did this on an empty industrial road and got busted 65 in a 45 by a motorcycle cop. He cut me no slack. Gotta live near empty canyon roads to really enjoy a car.

Mr. Valentine makes a wonderful product to help in these situations; the Valentine Gen 2 V1. It has saved me many, many times.

I would LOVE to get a quality radar detector, but from what i've read all of them false report (constantly) due to the advanced parking/driving assist radar systems on the newer M550 and G30 platforms

The Gen 2 has done a great job of eliminating those alerts. The only falsies I get are some door openers; and that's only because I left X-band activated. The only issue I've read about is the gesture control doesn't play well with the V1.

Returning north from a snowbird early April 2020 this is just when Covid hit and the entire East Coast stretch of 95 was basically abandoned. even the tolls were closed. so eerie, esp as night fell.
I was in my 981 boxster and kept it only around a hundy max because I had hit a big pothole on 495 Alexandria (again amazingly empty usually don't get over about 40 on that stretch) and was still a little paranoid about the tires. plus with spouse. we were getting blasted by on the NJT by multiple guys easily doing 130-150. |
