R&T: Does anyone want an electric car?

Interesting study. What do you all think? I've been thinking about this for a while and this is definitely the sentiment of the vast majority of people around me:

Me neither but it is pretty obvious they are not concerned with what we think.

I am a pragmatist, so whatever does the job best. For a commuter car, I think an EV will work for a lot of people but not myself, my car sits on my driveway and i don't want to have to deal with the daily cord and charging in freezing weather. I only fill up gas once every 3 weeks but an EV you need to keep it topped up due to a lack of charging infrastructure.

So right now, i pass. Anything sporty though, needs to be ICE for me anyways. YMMV.

I don't even understand the idea of a fully electric car at this point, with the cost to the environment, and the current battery tech/price.

Crawl before you walk IMO. Give us more years of well-done hybrids, tiny turbo engines that are super fuel efficient with tiny electric motors to run when the ICE would be inefficient. Use electricity to supplement until it's fully time to replace (when there is obviously less cost to the environment).

That's my take on it anyway.

This.

And take time to build up the infrastructure, and clean ways of generating the electricity these cars will consume. All we’re doing now is shifting the CO2 emissions from cars to power plants. Net balance doesn’t change. Not to mention the damage done by mining to get these rare earth materials needed for batteries.

Some related questions I have are:

Won't the natural laws of supply/demand eventually balance out the electric vs gas savings as electric cars numbers increase?

What happens as electric cars numbers increase and they are more frequently involved in serious accidents that result in vehicle fire? Will reports of freeways being shut down for most of the day & the environmental impact of such events tarnish/sour people's opinion enough to affect sales?

And the biggest most important question: When Tesla's are eventually hacked and turned into self-driving murder machines, set with an algorithm to rapidly accelerate towards anything that resembles a human in their obstacle avoidance cameras, will the blood soaked streets affect people's desire to go electric....let's see you outrun a 1000hp plaid ?????...... Seriously though, electric cars are in that "happy" period of any relationship before reality sets in. Will any of the drawbacks of electrical car adaptation have any significant effect on sales?

I do, but not the current crop of offering out there, they are just too pricey, those that are 'inexpensive' feels like a car that's worth half the price, and I prefer not to buy a car from a bloke called Elon and Musk.

For a family use car, there is not enough infrastructures to support road trips, and I'd prefer not to be sitting at a service station for half an hour or an hour trying to entertain my kid every time i need a charge. The Fisker Ocean is interesting though. A PHEV is a far more likely choice for this purpose, at least for the forseeable future.

For a daily driver, they are way too pricey, offers range i don't need, and drive that will put me to sleep, those that do hit the price and range ideals feel like driving a car worth half the price. Ioniq for example, a gas version is about half the price of the electric one, and the interior is that of a car that's 20k, not 40k. The MINI Cooper SE maybe the only likely choice for me in this category right now (and that's expensive). I love the Honda E, but that is hyper pricey, and not sold here.

For the fun car, that will not happen, I do want to see what Mazda will do when the MX-5 goes electric (if that ever happens)

I like the idea of Tesla 3 AWD Performance, but the Ms and I both work from home full-time and will unless we get some kind of ridiculous offers to have to go back into an office.

I even sold my "fun" car last year because I was never driving it. So we are sharing one car at the moment as I wait to decide what I'm going to buy next. With both of us sharing a car we MIGHT go through 1 tank of gas per month?

So it also seems silly for me to go out and buy a $50-60k vehicle that might see 2-3k miles per year.

Personally, I don't want one. Generally, let the free markets decide and let each person choose freely what he wants to drive. Lastly, only those who want them should pay taxes related to them.

How about that recent snow storm that shut down I95 two weeks ago for almost 24hrs. Imagine if there were thousands of EVs dead there. At least with a gas burning vehicle you can put in a few gallons and be on your way. What about people like me who have to evacuate when a Hurricane is coming. How many EV's will make it out, and then how will all them get charged when they get to their destination. I've been without power for five days and I've been able to get gas, but how would I charge my EV if needed.

I'm against this entire EV platform, but I love making money with my Tesla stock.

I think they are good for certain use cases. However none currently exist for mine.

Something like Lucid Air is imaginable for me - solid exterior/interior design, comfort, nice performance, massive range.

Manufacturer's follow where the demand and money is. With the recent trends, SUVs/CUVs are where the public demand is. Autos over manuals.... Etc, etc. But with electric vehicles, it's the various governments dictating and driving all these changes and not the manufacturers.

This would be the logical approach, but the margins are too small on hybrids. OEMs don't want to bother with them.

They are phasing out gas...but the timeline is not public knowledge yet.

i'm for it. But only as a daily driver / beater. its not gonna be a weekend fun car.

the big upside to me for an EV is that its much more refined than a gas engine. no need for warm up. no vibration coming into the cabin. no lurching/downshifting when it struggles to climb a hill or the transmission cold. just get in and go and enjoy the s-class like silence.

i'd like an electric cayman or something like an electric BRZ to daily

My model 3 performance is the best daily driver. I have the acceleration of a exotic sports car, fuel efficiency of a Toyota Prius, and reliability of a toyota corolla. Why are people still buying ICE vehicles.

Because some can't afford a 40k+ EV?
