Which gearbox do I have

Hi guys, Google is failing me today.

Does anyone know which ZF gear box the LCI M550i uses.

I'm pretty sure the pre facelift M5 and 550i were using the 8hp75

Are 2021 onwards now using the 8hp76??

Thanks!

When they did the big engine upgrades to the 2020+ cars, they also beefed up the transmission with M5 parts, but I forget which ones.

Next question: if the same gearbox is used from 2017 through to 2022 what's the reason only 2017-2020 model years can support TCU reflashing right now? I know all about the ECU controls that came in from June 2020 onwards, were new controls also applied to the TCU at the same time?

Good question. I'd like to know this too. I believe the June 2020's are unlocked and July onward are locked. Mine was built in July, but someone here has a 2020 with a June build date and he is running a flash tune.

There were gearbox modifications done when the 2020 engine upgrades were done. I just cant remember (or find) what was done. It had something to do with beefing it up to handle the higher horsepower and torque loads.

This is the message I received regarding a TCU tune for my car from XHP:

BMW changed the TCU in April 2019. The early M550 from 2017 2018 and early 2019 have the Gen2 8HP TCU wich is supported. The transmission itself kept the same.

They're about to release for the new Gen3, but it's in beta testing.

That's why I'm going to have my tuner just use his own TCU file, it may not be as aggressive as XHP because they put a lot of r&d into it. But it's very important to have your transmission fall in line with the new torque numbers after a tune.

So its safe to assume the 8HP75 with the Gen3 TCU will be supported by XHP as and when they release all of the other Gen3 products as well?

Good question. I just emailed XHP again to confirm. They posted on their Instagram site what quarter of 2022 the releases are coming. Except it says 8HP76, so my question to them was what about our 8HP75?

It may not matter because they keep calling it the 8HP- 3gen, so maybe it's for that 8HP75 and 76?

I'll let you know what they say as soon as they respond.

Also my tuner did say that even though it'll be coming out shortly that there's probably going to be some bugs. I think I read somewhere that one of the cars that they've already released, someone's having trouble with it or it's not working correctly.

That's why I'm just going to have my tuner tune the TCU while he's tuning on the dyno, so the engine and trans can work together after the tune

Did you need to send the ECU and TCU to Russia for an unlock procedure ?

I was about to send it to Russia and then the war started. So I waited until they were set up and Helsinki. They can only accept packages from the European Union, so had to commission someone in Germany to receive it and then send to Helsinki to be unlocked, then receive it back from Helsinki and send it to me.
