Weird Dash Display
OK, here's one for you all. After driving a bit and stopping the 2019 540xi, I then restarted it and this is what my dashboard display looked like. It was off center to the left and vibrating like I was watching a video with an incorrect frame rate. I then moved the car a little, parked it and turned it off. When I started it came on again like this. Then I turned it off again and restarted it and it was normal. I guess I will take it into the dealer with the video but if they can't duplicate it...We'll see. (Sorry about the photo quality--It is a pic from a video which I couldn't upload here). --Bob

There is a service bulletin to rectify this issue.
Two resolutions depending on the build date. Vehicles produced up to 01/31/2018 - Replace instrument cluster and software update. Vehicles produced after 02/01/2018 - Software update only. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...45344-9999.pdf

Good thing I don't have active cruise control nor heads up display.

OK going in next Monday for reprogramming of the display. If that fails to cure the problem we are looking at a replacement. It has not shown up again since the first time, but then I have not driven it too much. As my SA noted, if it happens again just shut it off and restart; should go away. I will report after I get the work done if it shows up again.--Bob

Picked up my 2019 530e in October of last year. I had this same thing happen 3 times in about 3 months.
Dealer did the reprogram a couple months ago and it hasn't happened since. I think you will be good after the reprogram. Took them a couple hours to do it, though. |

A follow up. I took the car in to the BMW dealer ostensibly for a re programming to see if that would solve the problem. My SA said that during the reprogramming, while connected to BMW, BMW notified them that the display needed to be replaced. My SA said they probably recognized something to indicate programming alone wouldn't cut it. They ordered the display, which arrive the next day, and after install and reprogramming the car was ready by noon. So I hope that solves it; it should. --Bob

I agree, but of course I also had to reprogram all of my Bimmercode changes. This happens every time they reprogram the car. Not a big deal but annoying when I first drive it home. I really like having it start automatically in Sport mode and not having the Auto Start/Stop function. --Bob

My M550 display started doing that today, it looks exactly like yours in the picture.
I'll see if it clears up after sitting for a while. If not, I may try disconnecting the battery and see if that clears it up. Otherwise, I'll have to take it in. My software is all factory, no aftermarket coding. |

I went for another drive after about an hour. The display was 90% normal, just a hint of a ghost image shifted to the left and slight flicker. It fully cleared up after about 10 minutes of driving. Hmmmm
All good for now! |

Did you take a picture of it when it was whacky? I did and showed to my Service Advisor along with the service bulletin number. Even though it was back to normal when I took it in they knew about it and had no trouble working on it for me. If you didn't take a picture you can always copy mine out of the post above and show it to them (or I can email you the original). Of course you might have to blur out the mileage. --Bob

I have a 2019 540i that had the same problem. They replaced the cluster in my car. Been working good for about 22,000 miles since the change. I had the same three restarts and it went away. I took a picture of it with my iPhone to show the service advisor. He called the mechanic to have a look at the picture. The mechanic said I know what this is. They will be able to fix it for you. In case you are wondering what is involved in changing the cluster here is a link to a maintenance page about it. They were able to replace mine without any sign of it being tampered with. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...ter/1VnZ98zA0b |

Had mine fixed back in Jan/Feb with a reprogram. The intermittent nature of the problem had me worried I was in for a disagreement with the dealership. I showed them a picture and they knew exactly what the problem was.
No issues since then. |

Would it cost money for it to be updated or replaced? Or is it free under recall or warranty?

I had the same issue for my 2019 530e. Happened 4 times since I bought it in September of last year. Took it to the dealer and they reprogrammed it and told me my software is the latest. Now it happened again. Was there any solution to this other than replacing the instrument cluster? My car is out of warranty so trying to avoid that.

I have this in my 2019 540xi. Is this something that they would do for free outside of warranty or am I on the hook for a whole new display and/or programming if I want to fix it?

I would suggest you go to your local dealer and ask them. Mine was covered under warranty but BMW might help beyond the warranty. If you have a good relationship with your dealer, that always helps but I would say talk with the service manager and see if he might be able to get BMW to help. It does seem to have been a not uncommon problem. First they will logically check to see if they can fix it just by programming but, as in my case, they might have to replace the display. Probably would have been a couple of grand out of warranty, but not sure. If BMW won't help, then I would certainly get an estimate from a trusted independent BMW dealer. Good luck! --Bob
