Will the 2021 taillights attach to the 2018-2020?

The new tailights look the same shape wondering if they'll fit when they are released.

If the surrounding body parts/panels are the same...then probably yes. If there's an electronic difference...that should be easier to overcome than body part differences.

I like the G30 a lot except for the rear taillights. I think they look Ok to me. The 2021 taillights are not the best looking taillights but I kinda like them better over what I currently have.

I was thinking to retrofit them to my car. They the size/shape seems to be identical. However, I'm not sure about the electrical function.

It seems they replaced the backup lights with LED's as well. This could cause some electrical warning in your dash...

maybe after the install you just gotta code it out like putting led lci lights onto a non lci 3 series

I don't see the point why they would have changed the shape of the body for the LCI lights, that would only cause more changes into the manufacturing process. Though i guess nowadays anything is possible to stop retrofitting stuff. New pinout is easily changed which was the retrofit case in the older models. Might even try this myself included, when the first lci's get blasted to pieces and are sold for parts.

I read they slightly revised the rear quarter panel and bumper around the tail lights so I don't think it will be as simple as plug and play.

I don't think anyone has taken delivery of an LCI yet, so my guess is no.

There's no way the sheet metal stamping and retooling needed to change the rear panel design would be cost effective. As is frequently commented, the LCI usually involves a deletion of options that make production cheaper and more efficient not the opposite. The lights will fit, just like the F30 LCI. Honestly, it's unfortunate that the distinctive look of the BMW taillight graphic has been updated to blend in with the rest of cars out there. Nothing special about the new graphic.

Zimmer, just wondering if there was any more detail that you can provide on this? I saw a ‘21 model today at my local BMW and man, those lights were sharp! And they looked virtually identical next to a ‘20 model. I’m just hoping that installing these lights on the 2018-2020 models will be somewhat painless...

Hi guys

Please look at Bavarian coding on Facebook, Simon is phenomenal at what he does.

He has fitted them and said it was straight forward

Thanks
Paul

Any details on if coding was required? Did you buy them through your dealer or somewhere else?

Don't know. Still trying to figure it out but it is including the work and the coding.

Not clear to me whether the coding may get lost after an update
