Spacers for LCI M550i: 12/18 or 12/20?
Hi All,
I just bought some Dinan lowering springs during Black Friday sale for my 2021 M550i with 20" style 846M rims and I'm now trying to figure out spacers. I've read all the threads and am caught between 12/18 and 12/20. I really feel like the car is under tired and needs to be set up flush (as opposed to poke). Anyone had both? Anyone running 20mm on the rear? Thanks so much in advance for any pro tips. |

When you drive the OEM wheels, spacers with 10mm (front) and 12mm (rear) are perfect in my opinion
This setup can easily be driven without adjustments to the wheel arch. |

12/20 looks perfect to me on mine, but it isn't lowered. I started with 12/17, but always felt the rear could use a bit more, so a year later I swapped out the 17's for 20's.
BTW, Dinan does not make 18 - they make 10,12,15,17,20.

This is what I'm a touch worried about. I will be dropping the car on Dinan springs. I was planning on doing H&R 12/18 (even though Dinan 17mm is cheaper and 1mm likely won't mean much but I want to err on the side of wider) but your pic of the 20mm made me feel like I should go that direction. Do you think it would be too much poke with the drop?

Word of caution, I know an owner who did the Dinan springs and he developed a "clunk" going over uneven pavement and potholes. After troubleshooting every avenue, he went back to stock springs and the clunk was gone. I asked my Dinan shop about this and they confirmed they have had nothing but trouble with that clunk after installing Dinan springs. They won't even sell them anymore, partially because Dinan was no help with troubleshooting and recourse.

The clunk that I was hearing was in the rear left side. Everytime I would go over uneven pavement or speed bumps the noise would appear. After everything was said and done , back with the stock suspension.

I have the same situation, passenger rear. No solution from Dinan? Do you have M or DHP? I reached out and opened a ticket.

Ok, after much consternation I've ordered H&R 12/18 to pair with the Dinan springs. Will report back. Thanks everyone for chiming in!

Does your M550 have DHP? Let us know after you mount springs how you like them and if you develop a slight clunk sound inside the cabin on either rear side whilst going over bumps/potholes/manholes etc.

Yeah, I would be interested in it as well. I am not sure I could take a chance investing $1,000 into Dinan springs installed with the knowledge of the clunk issues. It will cost another $1,000 to undo it.

Dinan has out of the box their springs with DHP and 12/17 spacers and they are very daily driver focused so I'm hopeful that there will be no issues here on my non-DHP car. Will report back ASAP.

Springs in, ride handling kit in, spacers on, m performance ebay special back bumper on, front reflector delete on, obligatory red start/stop button in. Seems like everything is spot on. My mechanic advocated for 15/20 but my preliminary view from the pics is that 12/18 looks right. Will report back shortly.

On the fence whether to go 15/20 but overall really happy. 12/18 is like a well tailored OEM+ suit. I'm guessing 15/20 would look a touch more "aftermarket."

It looks great. I think 15's would be too much up front. 20's out back is not a glaring need, it's a matter of do you want the rears to stick out a touch more than the front. I did to improve the stance, so I went from 17mm to 20mm in the back. Of course the wheel type matters. I have 668's. The right size spacer is dependant on the wheel, they all don't sit the same even if they are both OEM 20"'s.
