The article also says BMW has no plans to use it on production cars.

I think is the best way to make the BMW logo as minimal as possible. Super modern. "Less is More"

We'll have to wait for a while: "A spokesperson said there are 'no plans' for the new logo to appear on production vehicles, although BMW emblazoned it on the hood of its Concept i4 vehicle, a [edit: sic] electric car aimed at Tesla (TSLA) that made its debut Tuesday."

Will be interesting to see how the clear plastic portion holds up on the front of a vehicle.
I think that portion will have a different look in time.

I kinda like the new emblem, but I have a feeling it won’t look as good on certain paint colors... Misano blue for example.

I do like the minimality of it. That being said thou, I'll reserve judgment till I see it in person...

The new logo reminds me of when Apple changed all the iOS UI icons from photo realistic icons to flat boring icons of today.

Being able to see the paint color through the logo on body panels is one thing, but that won't work on the wheel center craps or the steering wheel, etc.

I think the logo will work well on some colors and less so on others. The biggest issue I see with it is leaving the blue/white while discarding the black ring around it. The black ring was a distinguishing feature of the BMW pedigree and brand, so I think removing the black circle diminishes BMW history. When hybrid cars started emerging, it seemed like some brands were using the color blue to distinguish hybrid or electric versions from gasoline, so when I see blue/silver combinations on a car I think "efficient" not "performance". But, maybe BMW is so worried about the future of gasoline powered cars that they felt this was a necessary first step? Not sure but from a cosmetic standpoint, if they wanted to discard the pedigree completely instead of being caught in a weird middle ground is alternate the shade of grey in the propeller, like silver and gunmetal or silver and black chrome. But not just blue without the black circle. Ugh.

Boring, neutral, and elicits little emotion and at best numbness. I think it's a perfect match for the driving dynamics that BMW is currently bringing to market in non-m vehicles.

So why mixing two logos then?

I don't like the new one, so weak and empty, the old one is much better.

"Clean" design just means a lack of inspiration.

Its a lego looking train wreck. BMW spent too long establishing their current badge.

Pretty rough take. It's nice but a little bit aftermarket looking.

Hope they put a clear cover of some sort over it because that's gonna be a pain to clean. I just imagine dried wax or dirt getting stuck in there, needing a qtip to clean out. And microfiber getting snagged on the M and W edges when you wipe past it.

Also requires a more precise and complex assembly line to apply that perfectly if they're all individual pieces.

I wonder if it's not a negative background, but the background is painted body color. A body coloured circle that the logo elements are affixed to.

EDIT: Here is another picture of it. It's a clear background. Not even that quality of clear either. Looks hazy and distorted. Maybe due to the adhesive.

Don't get anything under the clear part or you'll see it forever.
